iPad Home Screen upside down and will not rotate

Hello everyone. I have seen this same question multiple places, and have tried everything suggested, but none of them work. I checked the little switch above the volume and it is not locked. I went the the Settings- General- area and the Lock Rotation is not checked. I have done the reboot (holding the home button and power button) but when it is turned back on, the same thing happens! HELP PLEASE!! I have never had this problem before and just updated my software. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. If nothing else works, here I come Apple Store for service! Thank you.

The side switch is the key. Depending on your settings, it may affect the mute or it may affect the rotation lock. This support article from Apple provides detail.

In case you're wondering, here is the history. Originally, the mechanical switch affected only the rotation lock and the mute was a software switch elsewhere. In IOS-3, it was changed to be the mute switch and the rotation lock became a software switch. This was done to ensure consistency among IOS devices. Unfortunately, a large quantity of users complained loudly, alleging that they turned the rotation lock on and off several times every hour and the convenience of the mechanical switch is essential. In IOS-4, Apple bowed to the whiners and made the switch function selectable and now we're stuck with a mess.

If when you moved the button above your volume control you saw Mute, then you do have Lock Orientation in place, and to fix it double click your home button to bring up the task bar (most recently used apps) and with your finger swipe them all the way to the right and the last icon on the left will be a lock orientation/unlock orientation icon. Touch it and you'll unlock orientation. Tap your home button once more to close the task bar and things should rotate normally.
