To add to AnsMusic's correct answer, the RAM will not be covered by the Apple warranty, but if you buy it from a reputable vendor, the RAM will have a lifetime warranty, better than Apples. Check your manual, it is an easy upgrade.

I went in today and I was told that it does void your warranty. Just get your 3rd party RAM, use it, and if you need to take your MBP in for service, but the original Apple RAM in.

Apple's own site as provided by others does state that RAM and Hard Drive are user upgradeable and does not void your warranty. Unless you do some damage to your MB while changing your RAM or Hard Drive.

Your user guide also states that it doesn't void your warranty.

The information you receive is maybe to deter you from doing it yourself and having the store do it for you for an extra charge.

I see. To be more clear, my understanding was that 3rd party ram will void your warranty whereas upgrading your Ram through Apple would not void it.

I've looked and can NOT find where Apple states that replacing the HDD in a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro will NOT void the warranty.....can you point me to that article please?

I've seen instruction on replacing RAM in a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro, but nothing ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1270 ) about the HDD.
