Karsten's info is incredibly useful.
I assume you know that FCP X can be used to create and burn simple DVDs?
The emphasis is on the word simple.
No fancy iDVD type motion templates, but you can make a basic menu.
Hey, Karsten.
Awesome summary of disk options…a five star Tip.

thanks, Russ, you're Welcome!
… kind of farewell-gift:
I'm not using iMovie anymore now for about a year ....
here, FCPX + M5 is my new toy 🙂
Great info, many thanks
Karsten,
I appreciate you providing all the options available since I bought a new 2012 OS X 10.7.4 primarily for the imovie and found out I can't burn a dvd of the movies! So I bought a boxed version of ilife 06 and when I tried to install it I received the message: "Can't open because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
Since I would like to preserve the HD quality, is Toast my best option-- for my third try at making a movie? Or can I even make a HD video with my computer?
Thanks!
You wouldn't have been able to make an HD movie with iDVD.
Toast is an option but the menus are so basic you may as well use the built in FCP X DVD creation facilities.
With FCP X you can burn a high definition (AVCHD) disc using normal cheap standard definition DVDs and your standard Superdrive burner.
However, you will need a Blu-ray player to view the disc.
