If you haven't, I would download and install the updated driver for Snow Leopard 10.6.8, which you are apparently running according to your profile, found on the following website page,:
Hope this helps 🙂
I tired that. Unfortunately I keep getting the following error message."cannot communicate with scanner. Cable maybe disconnected or scanner maybe turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed 2.155.33"
The scanner is connected directlt to my Imac and it is switched on.
I have logged a query with canon support.
Have you tried using Image Capture in your Applications folder - does that work?
If you find that Image Capture doesn't work/is a bit limited, have a look at the (paid for) VueScan. You can run it in demo mode to check that it works before buying a licence.

When you open System Preferences > Print & Fax does it show up in the device pane? If it does select it and see if that puts it into the system.
I'm having the same issues with my scanner as well. I've tried with two different MBPs one, I tried to install the driver from Canon's website (that says it's compatable with Mountain Lion) to no avail. After trying everything i could to make that computer work (running updates, deleting and readding it from Print & Scan) I connected the second computer to it, didn't install the drivers from Canon, instead went to System Updates and installed the Apple Canon Printer Drivers 2.9 that was immediately available once I connected the scanner (no Canon printer or scanner had ever been connected to that computer before). I ran that update, restarted, connected the scanner, still won't scan. I get the same error messages. Anyone have any ideas?
