No.

The iPad does not natively connect to normal file shares, but there is third-party software that allows this. FileBrowser is one such app that is often recommended:

I have no first-hand experience with it, no. All I know is from the comments and reviews I've seen and the description of the product's features.

Take a look at SharePlus. It is designed to connect to SharePoint. Not sure if it will connect to Server 2003 but it is supposed to work directly with SharePoint. There is a free Lite version as well to give you a chance to see if it will work at all without having to pay for the full app ($19.99). You may need to work with your IT department to set up the connection.

I can't vouch for how good it is because my work WiFi has SharePoint access blocked.

The lite version of SharePlus doesn't support anything other then MOSS and WSS connectivity. For non SharePoint connectivity you need the pro version @ $19.99. Probably not the most cost effective solution (and I have heard that not SharePoint connectivity is a little iffy).
