If you are using an US keyboard layout you should find the tick symbol by pressing ALT - V (Option key - V)

If this is the symbol you're looking for #, hold Opt key click 3.
Since I use a german keyboard and pressing ALT-V gives me this: √
why wouldn't it work on your keyboard? Just try it...

On my US English OSX, it actually shows a square root sign. Changing the font to Arial seemingly shows a tick though.
FYI: on a Finnish keyboard the combo is ALT-J
I also get the square root sign on my UK keyboard.
Have not found how to get a tick yet.
