Q: I still cannot connect to the AirDisk from remote locations on a PC. Is it possible?

Windows XP submits username and password, but it's not accepted. Like it wants a workgroup name. Works fine on the local network (even with remote IP address).

Unless you port forward SMB to the LAN side the Airport will only offer AFP (Apple File Protocol) to the WAN.. you cannot connect to AFP from PC.. When you connect in local network you are connecting via SMB.

Remotely SMB is not allowed by most ISP in the world.. it is far to insecure. Nor is AFP btw.. it is subject to security flaws of man in the middle attack. But people do use SMB on some strange port.. don't do it.. the fact is you are still presenting an open port to the world and security is hopeless. Eventually someone will find it.

Use vpn.. that is the only secure and reliable way to do it.

You will need to replace the AEBS as the main router and use a vpn router.

Remember Apple never intended these things to be used in this way.. it is not a NAS.. even a TC is primarily a backup device for Time Machine (on laptops). It does not offer to the world any standard protocol, ftp, sftp, http, https, ssl, or any vpn. Nothing.
