How can I find where a specific font is used in a Pages document

I have a Pages document that always shows a font missing error when opened. Is there any way to find where that font is supposedly used? Alternatively, if I install the font, the message doesn't appear — I assume that means that the font was found. Is there a way to find where that font is used in the document?

Hi Bob,

Your assumption is correct. If the font is installed, it is no longer missing.

If the missing font is "Calibri," the answer to your 'where?' question is likely "Everywhere." This is the current default font for MS Word documents, and won't be on your Mac unless you have installed MS Word, or have installed the font itself.

For documents of a 'reasonable' length, the easiest way to locate the use of specific fonts is likely to click in the first line of the document, then press and hold the down arrow, and watch the Font name pop-up in the Format bar.

The name will change as the insertion point moves into each different font in the document.

Hi Bob.

For the present, at least, it's going to involve a visual inspection.

When you open the document, you can select a specific font in the Document Warning window, and replace it with another, using the Replace Font pop-up at the bottom of the window.

Choose a font that will be easy to spot, such as Wingdings, used below to replace Cambria:

At this point, you could replace the occurrences individually with a suitable font, or press command-Z to undo the replacement, or discard the Pages version of the document and open the original a second time to produce a new Pages document.

For the future, you use Provide Pages Feedback. in the Application menu (in Pages, the "Pages" menu) to send a feature request to Apple. The link will also take you to the Feedback page.

Barry, Calibri would be too easy. 🙂 Unfortunately it is a font called, Pristina. This is a great idea.

The document includes a number of text boxes and tables which will, I suspect, make this solution a bit more tedious. I just scrolled through the document as you suggested (16 pages) and didn't find any instances of Pristina. However, my guess is that Pristina may well have been used for a single character/word/symbol and wouldn't show up using this method unless the cursor just happened to pass that single character. If the missing font had been used for a block of text, this would work quite well.

It would be really helpful if one could search a Pages document for formatting characteristics as well as for text.

The primary font is Times New Roman, though some of the text boxes use JRLHand (a handwriting font) and other use Champagne & Limousines. I thought I should be able to spot where Pristina had been used, too. But, even after installing the font, I can't find it with a visual inspection. That's why I think it might be a single character/symbol or even a space or return character that somehow got tagged as Pristina.

Ah, well. I think the answer to my original question is that there is not way to find a font (or other formatting feature) except by visually scanning the document.

In my mind, that's a real shortcoming. At the very least, adding a button to find where a font is missing to the "font missing" error message would be very helpful.

Thanks, Jerry. That's good to know. I'm still trying to learn Styles in Pages. I used AppleWorks (a.k.a. ClarisWorks) for SOOOOO long and knew how to do that with AW but I haven't had/taken the time to dig into Pages to the same depth.

Unfortunately, I started with a document that someone else had created. I made major changes but apparently never hit the spot with the missing font.
