What do you consider "the obvious"?
Hard to help without knowing what you have tried.
Rebooted phone multiple times, reset all settings, checked volume settings and ring tones. Basically the only way to get any volume control or ring on a call is with the headphones. Software is v 5.1.1. I'm wondering if this is a bug or a hardware problem. Basically like having a silent phone, no text tones, keyboard clicks or e-mail sounds. Videos and music are fine using the sliding volume control
Is the silent switch on the side of the iphone on?
Have you tried a restore?
Restore as new?
Also heard of a trick regarding plugging/unplugging headphones multiple times???tried and didn't work
If you consider rebooting holding the on button and home button at the same time until it restarts, then i dont know there. Did it seem to be a problem or did it just randomly stop working? That happened to my Ipod once. I plugged in headphones, then unplugged them, and it worked. Another time i had to re sync it to get it to work. If you try that and it does not work, then I do not know what else it could be.
Checked the silent switch many times, have not done a restore as new, I take it that resets to factory then I just reload contacts etc.
Just randomly stopped, possible when I updated. Have re synced also
The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup... Restore as New...

My phone is doing the same thing!! I can't fix it it.. I have done everything BUT a restore, only becuase it takes sooo long and I've read that it hasn't been working for anyone else.. HELP!
if more than one person is having a problem, maybe it's a hardware/software error?
So what do i do????
I know somewhere on this site there is a place to look up your model number and then see if anyone else had a problem. at least I think so. I'll try to find it.
Have u tried:
1) re sync
2) plug/unplug headphones multiple times
3) hold in home and power button until it restarts (nothing is lost, i've tried it myself)
My volume buttons randomly stopped working yesterday. This is what I did:
1) turned on ipod and waited for home screen to appear
2) double clicked home button
3) pressed the play button on a song (the song has no sound and it wont let you ajust the volume)
4) let song keep playing with no sound and placed on ipod dock for 20 seconds
5) song then played
6) took ipod off after 20 seconds
7) it then played and volume buttons work now
Using iPhone 4.
I'm having the same trouble as Mr Chompers, tried everything you lot have tried, reboot, restore which took two hours, plug/unplug earphones etc.
It happened to me when I updated software to 5.1.1. now can't use volume buttons, can't use mute button and no sound for texts/calls, been quoted £30 for a fix, but I feel I shouldn't have to pay for incompetance should it be a software issue.
Definately won't be buying another iPhone, my faith in Apple's innovation and quality passed with the late Mr Jobs RIP.
I won't even mention my iMac that scratches all cd or data discs when I put them in :-/ Paid £1500 for it and had to modify it with selotape, even though I did take out the additional 3 year warranty.
Any help on the iPhone issue would be great,
Tim.
