How to create a bootable USB Flash?

I'm familiar with the process of creating a bootable Live USB Flash of a Linux distro like Ubuntu, for a PC, but I don't know how to make that work for a Mac, since they don't have BIOS. I am guessing that It should be in a format that works with EFI, but I don't know how to do that.
