Windows 8 randomly freezes on MB and MBP

Dear community,

I have an important issue with all my MacBook and MacBook Pro.

I have installed Windows 8 Developer Preview a long time ago and was experiencing random freezes.

At that time, I have tried any possible solution to fix it... nothing worked and no solution on forums.

I have then got my hands on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but the problem was still there.

Now, Windows 8 Release Preview is out and the problem is still there.

I can't find any solution to this issue. It is not a crash but a real freeze.

I have to push the power button for 5 seconds to shut it down and then power it on.

I have tried several possibilites:

- on my MacBook Pro with a SSD

- on my MacBook (1st generation of unibody but not yet renamed in Pro) with a HDD

- in a VHD, in bootcamp partition, even as unique partition (removing any Mac OS system).

Nothing works. The freezes are very random (already happened before the login phase !).

I can stay with the system stable for 2-3 days, but sometimes it crashes after a few seconds.

I identified that Chrome and Dropbox made the system to freeze quicker, but I am not sure why.

I was thinking of 3 possibilites of issue:

- the driver of the graphic card (but it is not exactly the same in both MacBook)

- some special/reserved disk space that Windows would be trying to write

- a memory issue (trying to write in an unsafe or protected memory place)

Do someone experience this kind of freeze ?

Do someone get a fully working and never get any freeze with Windows 8 on a MB or MBP ?

It seems to work fine for people with newest MB and MBP, and MB air. I am not sure it is true.

Best regards,

Jérémie

For what it's worth. I ran into this problem as well. I'm posting my process for reference:

I'm using a 13" Macbook Pro mid 2010, windows 8 RTM build.

  • I originally installed RTM using Boot Camp Assistant "Version 5.0.0 (444)" and used the associated installer. (although I modified Info.plist it to install from USB)
  • I reinstalled the trackpad drivers, but I don't think this is necessary.
  • I was experiencing random crashes before and after the trackpad driver reinstall.
  • I then did bcdedit fix ( "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes" from admin command prompt)
  • I still experienced crashes
  • I then installed the latest nvidia driver (302.80) and didn't have any more issues. (an hour or two so far which is longer than it had run yet, most freezes were ten or so minutes in)

Hope that helps someone in the future.

The bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes ficed my rebooting and freezing issues. The only issues im having is the upgrade path. I have a backup image of windows 7 Home, I have over 400 programs so its obviose that I dont want to install all. This is a reason why I am a Mac guy. Whats the point of making a backup and an image if it only works with that OS and edition? To use Windows 8 anything, im going to have to rebuild my OS. I have a life so its not going to happen. Thanks for letting me down Microsoft.

you know a lot it seems but you don't know who to or willing to buy and spend the time on Windows backup and restore methods and programs.

Until 8 is out though we all know that we either setup with 7 and use 8 for testing and to discard when 8 is released - either in a VM or VHD or on its own partition.

As for having 400 programs.... and not just the small CCleaner and junk, put the 3rd party stuff on another hard drive or something and not with the OS. My OS is small and 33GB.

Nothing to do and moving to Mountan or Lion and droppind Rosetta and having to upgrade...

you should get your backup with windows 7 and then upgrade to windows 8. you won t lose most of your programs. most of the programs, I bet that they do not need to be installed...so you can even use them from their old folder.

there is no reason to backup from windows 7 to windows 8 as they have th upgrade feature. Microsoft did the right thing... I don't get your issue, really

I have the same issue.

MacBook Air (2011) with the newly released Windows 8 Enterprise (RTM) on Bootcamp.

I've tried several fixes (disabling dynamic ticks, installing Hyper-V, installing new Intel HD drivers) - but they did not work.

Sometimes Windows 8 runs for a few minutes, sometimes for a few hours.

Currently I'm testing if the WiFi connection might be the cause - so I've disabled the WiFi adapter and use the USB-Ethernet adapter.

Very strange and annoying :-/ ...

Ive spent alot of time with Windows back up and restore but the only way to truely backup prgrams is with an image restore but the problem is my image is of Windows 7 Home Prem 64bit and so far there is not upgrade path to Windows 8 RTM, it only give me the option to keep files and move to old windows folder. I ended up spending a whole weekend rebuilding WIndows 8 Pro 64 bit and then activated it and created an image so now I have to and when Windows 8 Ultimate comes out, I hope I will be able to upgrade, if not then oh well, Ill have to rebuild again which *****.

Disabling dynamic ticks worked like a charm, no reboots ever since. I love Windows 8 and look forward to more apps being developed for the now not called Metro and updates. Its faster than OS X ML and runs leaner. I can use VMware, movie editing, and using photoshop wihout worring about maxing out my 8 gigs of ram like when im in OS X ML. OS X ML is faster than Lion but it still uses more memory than OS X SL. I love Apple and their products, ve never had any issues ever since the G4 days when I switched and then Lion came and now my Macs run like crap. So disappointed. Also dont get me started about the heat.

I confirmed that, using bcdedit fix can help me enjoy Windows 8 RTM on my Macbook Pro mid 2010 without freezing. You should try one more as follows:

1. Open CMD from (Bootcamp (C)/Windows/System32/CMD)

2. Run CMD as administration

3. Type bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes in CMD, and

4. Restart your MAC

Enjoy Windows 8 RTM on Macbook Pro without freezing, I experienced it on 2 days.

Regards.
