Error (4251)

All of a sudden I cannot burn a cd in iTunes but can with other programs. I get "an unexpected error occurred (4251)". I have completely uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it. Running Windows 7 64 bit and using iTunes 10.6.1.7 I tunes prepares the disc but once it starts burning it cancels the burn in about 20 seconds. I have tried running iTunes as the administrator and in iTunes safe mode with the same results

Windows 7, iTunes 10.6.1.7

Could you post your diagnostics for us please?

In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:

Force Optical Power Calibration before burn is turned on in the preferences.

That might be our problem.

It's not a user-configurable preference, and it's set to "off" by default. But a transient issue might click it to "on", and the setting might now be causing the issue.

We should be able to reset it by rebuilding the iTunes preferences. For the basic technique, see the "Remove iTunes preference files" section from the "User-specific troubleshooting" section of the following document:

iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues

To see those folders, you'll need to first set your PC to view hidden files and folders

In your Start menu, open Computer.

In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.

In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.

Click OK.

Try running your diagnostics again after each rebuild to see whether the Force Optical Power Calibration before burn has been switched off. (I'm afraid I don't know which set of prefs it lives in nowadays.) Once it looks to be reset, try another experimental burn and see if she's still giving the error.

Prior to doing the preference file rebuilds: Best to make a note of any custom preferences you have set up for your iTunes. (Rebuilding pref files returns preferences to their defaults ... so you'll likely have to set some of those custom preferences up again from scratch.) Also make a note of any third-party plugins/add-ons you have installed. You may have to reinstall those after the rebuilds.

Things to watch out for during the rebuilds

Rebuilding the preference files in the \Local\ location causes the iTunes license agreement to run. So you'll need to agree to that again.

Rebuilding the preference files in the \Roaming\ location causes the iTunes Setup Assistant to run. When prompted to do so, do not add files to your iTunes library. (Otherwise you'll end up with a library full of duplicates.)

The "Force Optical Power Calibration before burn is turned on in the preferences" went away but it still failed to burn the cd. iTunes cancelled the burn and a screen recommending calibrating the disc before burning might help. When I check the box to calibrate and retried iTunes started to burn the cd and but then cancelled the burn with the error (4251)

Below is the latest diagnostics results. The error report stating the failure of the last burn was at a speed of 8X when in realty the burn speed oof 1X. Does this tell you anything?
