Jun 6, 2012 2:08 PM in response to tonyprod0by MrHoffman,So you've wiped the disk, reformatted it (as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), with a GPT), and are getting this error when you repartition?
Or are you attempting to repartition this when there's data on the disk? (That won't work... Disk Utility doesn't shuffle the data out of the way of the repartitioning. It's an archive, wipe, format, partition, install sequence.
And I'd recommend having a couple of backups here, and preferably at least one backup that's not connected to the box (at all) when tossing an erase or a format command at the disks.
For the OS X software versions here, all of the 2009-vintage iMac systems should boot 10.6.3. I'm assuming this is either a retail OS X 10.6.3 disk, or it's the disk that came with this Mac or an identical Mac; that this is not a disk that was included with another Mac.

Thank you for your reply
I have not reformatted the hard drive as yet and the instalation disk,s that came with the computer are coloured grey the originals.I have backed up the computer on a external drive but there is nothing to loose anyway I have nothing that i want to keep all i want to do is partition the hard drive so i can run vista or xp as i have all my studio programs that i have purchased in the past for my pc that i want to use. When i recieved the computer the previous owner wiped all the hard dive so when i booted up i had to insert the dvd instalation and application disk,s and start all over from new. When i try to use boot camp assistant i get this message
The startup disk must be formatted as a single mac os extended journaled volume or already partitioned by boot camp assistant for instaling windows.I must come over as a bit thick but after using a pc for 20 years this is all a bit new to me.One more thing does erase mean the same as format
I thank you in advance for helping
Regards Tracey

Jun 7, 2012 7:55 AM in response to tonyprod0by Keith Barkley,For adding a bootcamp partition you use the bootcamp assistant, which *can* re-partition the disk and move things around, so you don't lose data.
Check out the BootCamp Installation guide which gives step-by-step instructions:

Don't miss the free VirtualBox.
"VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. " Runs Windows on Mac OS.
Parallels:

& some catalog order places sell Parallels for 9.99 when you buy a mac.
With VMware Fusion, run the most demanding Mac and Windows applications side-by-side at maximum speeds without rebooting
