Why do my i-phone headphones not work on Ipad 3?

When I plug my iphone headphones in, the ipad 3 freezes up and no sound will come out of them?

Aren't I-phone headphones compatable with I-pad? I plugged in some boze noise cancelling headphones, and they worked fine.
