Copying CD's to a drive as 192k Mp3?

I have a Macbook Pro, and an external drive USB connected.

I want to use this drive as a USB HD for my TV to stream my personal CD's from my TV and hifi system, to play.

Is there a way to copy all of my CD's direct to the drive but as 192k MP3's and not AIFF files?

I don't necessarily need iTunes to do this, but I think this may be my only option? To quickly copy my albums to a drive as MP3's, would it be better to set up iTunes?

I don't want the tunes going onto my Macbook Pro first, just direct to the drive but being converted first..

Is this possible? or even possible with a PC (as I have a laptop) if its easier via windows - what would be my best way of approaching this?

Thanks
