How to use camera connector kit to transfer files and photos?

I bought a camera connector kit. I have few questions :

1) Can i transfer PDF files and videos(all format) via the connector? i tried transferring but it did not work. Are there steps i need to follow?

2) If i cannot transfer PDF file & videos via the connector, how can i transfer them and view them on my ipad?

3) I have transferred some photos via the camera connector to my new ipad. How do i use the USB connector to copy the photos to my thumbdrive or flashdrive?

I tried to plug in my thumb drive but an error stating cannot use device. The connected USB device requires too much power. How can i solve the problem?

I need to copy the photos.

Thank you.

You can only use the kit to copy photos and videos to the Photos app on the iPad - it doesn't support other file types nor the copying of content off the iPad. In order to copy photos and videos to the Photos app, you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them. You can't copy films/tv shows from iTunes via this route (they'll copy to the Photos app but they won't play).

For PDFs you can sync them to the iBooks app on the iPad (if you've downloaded it) via the Books tab when conencted to your computer's iTunes. Other PDF apps may use the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc

To copy photos off the iPad that you've copied to it via the kit, then you can use your computer : photos to computer.

Connect your iPad to your computer and and select the iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos. Select that tab and at the top of it you can select to sync folders, and select the 'parent' folder under which are the sub-folders that you want to sync to the iPad. Each of those sub-folders should then get their own album on the iPad - the albums only work to one-level i.e. if you select the 'My Pictures' folder at the top of that tab, then only the folders directly below it will get their own album on the iPad - any photos in sub-folders below them will be included in their parent's album.

There is a (little) bit of info on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236

Also note that you will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, they are instead deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit. I use this method frequently. If your flash drive uses too much power, get a new one.

Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).

Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

Pad2, the new iPad Supported Video Formats & Movie Formats

  • H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
  • MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
  • Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

Hey King_Penguin, thank you for solving my problem.

Hi Tom, thank you for your help. but how would i know which flash drive is suitable, do i have to just keep buying till i get the correct one that do not need too much power?

Sorry, but i some other questions : i sync some photos into my ipad. After syncing, a folder with all the photos i have synced appear in my ipad. I try to arrange those photos into various folders. I created the folders, it prompt me to select those photos from the folder (that appear in my ipad after syncing). I selected some photos and they went to the folder i created, but instead of moving the photos from the original folder to the one i have created, it simply copy the photos. now i have 2 sets of identical photos on my ipad. Can i delete the photos from the original folder, will it also delete the photos i have copied to another folder?

thank you once again. =)
