Sets off store alarms

First off - I've had my MacBook for 3 weeks now and it's amazing. Now my question - whenever I take my MacBook with me to the mall after work it sets off the security/shop lifting alarms for any store I go into. I was entering a Wal-Mart yesterday and it set the alarm off there too. Anyone know if there is a way to prevent the MacBook from doing this?

My guess is that the aluminum housing must have a similar makeup to the security strips. It's not unlike the way some belts, shoes, and sunglasses can trigger security alarms at the airport. You could try pulling your laptop out before you enter and holding it up above the security sensors when you enter/exit. Most store alarms are aimed at the waist area where merchandise is likely to be and not above one's head.

Better bet would be the magsafe feature on the MBP.
My PB w/ adaptor has gone through many many of those with no problems.

If you are really bored you could try bringing the adaptor in seperate from the MBP and see what combinations will set off the alarm. You may just find that it is only the power block and that by placing it in the bag with the laptop between it and the outside sensor on that side of your body is enough to fix that.

My security door card will set those off as well if I have it in my pocket without a wallet or something between it and the sensor on that side.

Good luck.

usually those things are picking up on a magnetized strip of metal. Thats why they tell you not to put your credit card on the demagnitizer or itll wipe out all your information and it wont scan anymore. Heh, thats kinda funny although i could imagine its embarassing. I'd bet its the magsafe more than the macbook itsself...either that or you're bringing in stolen goods! just kidding 🙂

It is highly likely that there is something else in the bag alongside the MBP that has a non-deactivated alarm strip.. Similar thing happened to me about a year ago. It was a Prada jacket where they put a tiny sticker strip and failed to de-activate it. It caused enough embarrasment believe me, I was going mad and finally the security at one of the department stores suggested I pass through the security without bags until the alarm stopped. It was the **** jacket. Needless to say I was miffed and complained to Prada. They seemed unfazed and not even apologised properly. I am still wondering why their alarm was never set off when i left their shop???? One of world's small wonders 🙂
