Sorting by artist vs. album artist

Is there a way to adjust the artist sort option on an iPod touch?

For example: I like to collect soundtracks. If the soundtrack is predominately an ensemble, I will change the name to XXXX Cast, and that usually fixes the problem. However, if I have something like, say, one of the Shrek soundtracks, which has multiple different bands, I would like to be able to select 'Counting Crows' and the song from the soundtrack appear in the listing for that artist. It doesn't, it shows up in a wildly unorganized folder lableled 'Various artists' and I can't search via band.

Is there a fix for this? I don't want multiple albums for each artist, but I would like to be able to have all my songs by one artist show up under their heading.
