Hi,

I got a new Mac and installed the Messages beta, but despite restoring my account with the migration assistant the messages app is empty, i.e. it shows neither the contacts I have previously chatted with nor the messages I have written or received. All I see is a list of phone numbers of people I previoulsy talked with. Is there a way of restoring old messages and the connection to the address book so I can see people's names rather than just their phone numbers?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Fiver

That is why it is called Beta Software. It is only in testing phase and is still being developed properly for it's official release, so chances are pretty good that you may have issues with it. But it is advertised as such when you downloaded it, so can't help you. Someone else may have had some luck, but personally I steer a mile clear of Beta software.

    Good Luck

    Hi,

The Install Process is to restart the computer afterwards.

Messages also offers a Uninstall Option  in the  App menu.

This would mean you should Unisntall and then Reinstall and then Restart the computer.

Migration sounds like a second computer which you were tryng to either upgrade to Lion  with Messages or tying to get just Messages.

As neither of these follow the Messages Install methodology it is unlikely to work.

You will have to decide on what you need to do to recover to a  point where you an Start again.

    Ralph,

thanks for the help. I guess uninstall and reinstall would be the best option. Luckily, Messages has miraculously recovered the messages and connection to the address book. Maybe it just needed time and some tlc...

As to Peter, I don't want to be rude, but if you can't help there is little point in berating me for installing beta software and then asking a question about it. I know it is beta, I understand what that means, but I can't see any reason that I shouldn't ask for help on a forum when I have a problem. Whenever I don't have an answer I tend to keep out of it, but that's just me...

Again, thanks Ralph for your tips. I will mark your contribution as helpful, as I didn't use it to solve the problem.

    Regards,

    Fiver
