Mainstage - map MIDI message to Playback controls

Mainstage 2.2.1 on MBpro 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 8Gb RAM

Here's my dilemma - I have the Logidy UMI3 3-button programmable USB MIDI footswitch with 3 buttons. Each of the 3 buttons can be programmed to send just about any type of MIDI message (note on/off, CCs, program changes, MMC, etc) or sequence of MIDI messages. I got it specifically to drive Playback and/or Looper in Mainstage with the idea of using the three buttons as Record, Play, Stop.

Problem is I have no idea how to map MIDI messages onto the corresponding controls in Playback or Looper. The user guide gives no guidance. How would I go about this?

MainStage, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

It is in the user guide: typically you add 3 screen controls to the work space (one for each button), assign them to the MIDI message by activating learn and press the button on the device 3 times (it would be best if they send e.g. CC #80, #81, #82 or so and 127 if the button is pressed and 0 once the button is released). Go to Edit mode and map these buttons to any parameter in any plugin, e.g. Playback. This can again be done via Learn (select the button, activate learn and click on the button you want to control)
