Agreed. Tried setting up the account in the iPod touch itself, and now whenever I try to sign into anything Apple related I get a "need to verify account" message that takes me to the stupid payment options screen, where magically there is no "none" option.

My kids will be using these things, and the only purchases they will be making is via prepaid iTunes cards. Period.

My username says it all...

Apparently, you can create an apple id with a brand new e-mail address if you fire up the app store first, and "buy" a free app - supposedly when you try to do so, it will prompt you to log in, or create a new apple id.

again, supposedly if you create a new apple id with a new user/e-mail then there is supposedly an option to not have a payment selected. supposedly.

brilliant. simply brilliant. *sarcasm noted for those that fail to see the obvious*

since the rest of the "support" I've tried to access has been blatantly wrong, and/or misinforming, I'm not about to try another e-mail/new apple id until this thread, and my ranting on facebook has seen some light of day for a while.

I have been able to figure this out...

Here are the steps:

  • Open iTunes and make sure you are not logged on to any Apple ID.
  • Select a Free app to download.
  • It then prompts you for a Apple ID
  • Select Create a New Apple ID
  • Enter the email address that you want and the remaining information required
  • On the next screen, the payment options screen, there will be a "None" button
  • Press the None button.
  • Now you have a Apple ID not tied to any CC and they can download all the free apps they want.

Yeah, I figured that out as well, AFTER having already created another AppleID with my primary e-mail. That AppleID is now essentially useless as any attempt to do pretty much anything is met with "please review your account settings" B.S. whereby they try to lock you into a payment method.

You can't delete AppleID's either, so I guess my wife's e-mail will now be the 'control' for the kids' new iPod Touches.

Wonder if a prepaid visa gift card would work to resurrect the one tied to my e-mail account. That might be worth a brief try if I end up winning this other police auction and end up with more apple products in the house.
