Ipod Trouble

I have a3rd gen Ipod and downloaded ios from Itunes. I am unable to upgrade. I have Itunes 10.6 on my computer , & when i have my Ipod plugged in & check for updates i always get apple showing Ipod software up to date. Angry Birds still won"t load on my Ipod

Please verify the model number of the iPod on the back. If it is A1288, it is really a 2nd generation and can't be upgraded beyond 4.2.1

If you are stuck at iOS 4.2.1 that indicates that you have a 2G iPod. A 2G can only go to 4.2.1. If yurs is an 8 or 16 GB one it is a 2G. Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPod. A 32 GB can be either to identify yours:

The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.
