why wont my apple tv connect in 1080p mode

My Apple TV cannot connect to my TV in 1080p mode, only 720. My TV supports 1080p. Why is this?

Apple TV, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Hi Kathy,

I think you hit the nail right on its head....I have since realized the same thing with my 60" Pioneer, it is only a 1080 interlaced tv. I still love and when I go to the HD channels from Comcast the picture is very rich. So my next question would be why apple tv cannot "handle" these situations (tv's that are not true 1080p but 1080i)??? Does it require that much more hardware circuitry??

happened to me. I turned off the apple tv and checked my tv's picture settings. It turned out someone accidentally changed the tv's screen resolution to 4:3. I changed it back to 16:9. When i turned on the apple tv problem was fixed.

Your tv's picture settings depend on the brand but may usually be found in the "menu" option (check menu > picture settings > screen mode > 16:9)

Hey!!

Hello Friends,

I was also with the problem described in this topic, as you read in my previous post. I was not understanding why my 3rd generation Apple TV was not allowing me to change the resolution to 1080p.

I have a cable TV decoder connected to the TV HDMI input and I also have the 3rd generation Apple TV connected to another HDMI input. Both devices were connected via a default HDMI cable, with the same length, same brand, in other words, connected through identical cables.

I just swapped the cables and it worked. I don't know why but it worked. Yes, I know that it makes no sense, but it worked and I am still trying to understand why my Apple TV is now working perfectly in 1080p resolution.

So, if you are experiencing this problem, just replace the cable and do not try to understand. Just do it!!

I hope it helps you to enjoy your 3rd generation Apple TV in 1080p resolution!! =)

Hi Robert,After hours of well, frustration, changing cables etc; we finally understand this-it ISNT apple it IS our tv, irrespective of the fact that it said HD 1080p when we bought it a few years ago. In fact, it and most others (that aren't brand new) actually are not; we finally got someone at JVC to truly explain and then we went further. In order to work with apple, it actually has to be a no kidding guaranteed 'progressive' tv not interlaced. This is really buyer beware; now when companies say HDMI 1080p you still have NO guarantee that it won't overscan, underscan, or distort. In europe for example: TV's have to be regulatorily 'certified' that they are true 'p' progressive tv's. The US has no such control; 2012 tv's really started coming out as true progressives.

I'm also real sure that few tv sales people will even have a clue as to what you are talking about. So for us, before we buy our next TV we will research it to death. As for now we have a 5 year old 70" tv that we can't afford to replace; the same apple unit DOES work upstairs in our 32" new tv however.

Good Luck to you
