If no change after powering the iPhone off and on and/or after a reset, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes.
If no change after that, make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby to determine if there is a hardware problem.

Gave up, took a shower, and returned to the phone and found that it is back to normal - all sounds seem to be working! Strange, but happy!
