Q: Need iOS 4.3 for Home Sharing

I have a 2nd gen Touch. Running iOS 4.2.1. Ckd for update. Says its current version. Need 4.3 for Home Sharing. No generation limit listed for Touch in Home Sharing support. How can I get iOS 4.3? Is it available for 2g Touch?

iPod touch, 2nd Generation

Checked other postings. It looks like I'm out of luck with 2g Touch. Would have been nice for Apple to list 3g Touch or later on Home Sharing support pages. 2g AppleTV works with iOS 4.2.1. Go figure.

Apple may make great hardware, but their support for older versions stinks. I have a click wheel iPod, too. How many iPods do I need to buy?

Also, since I'm venting, the Genius Bar stinks, too. Make an appointment and prepare to wait. The whole store appears to be chaotic. It takes forever just to get someone to talk to you. Want to buy something simple, like earphones? Good luck trying to find someone to check you out. I was told there's an app for that (to check yourself out). Huh?

Can't wait to see how the JCPenney experiment works out with the Apple Store genius in charge.

Sorry but the iPod 2g can only be updated to the iOS 4.2v currently. Instead I'd prefer you use home sharing between two diffrent itunes libraries. Hope it Helped.

You didn't read my post above. I can't give you credit for the answer. Also, it appears that you are not familiar with the American idiom. I really couldn't care less what you prefer for me. You have no idea what my application is for Home Sharing.

I am able to use Home Sharing to stream my music from iTunes on my computers to my various audio systems in the digital domain, preserving the original resolution of the files. I can use the iPad Camera Connection Kit with my iPad. I then have to use a USB DAC to convert the stream to analog. Tethering my iPad to my various systems is not always convenient. My iPhone works with Home Sharing using my Wadia 170 iTansport. This eliminates the need for a USB DAC. but i don't want to tie up my phone just to play music. This is why I would like to use my 2g Touch.

I'm sure the iOS version limitation has to do with the CPU in the Touch, but it is exasperating, especially when there is conflicting information on the Apple support site about iOS 4.3 being required and then saying iOS 4.2.1 is OK with AppleTV. Also, the instructions listed for using the iOS devices are incorrect. There is no Settings>iPod selection. It is Settings>Music for iPhone, iPad, and even version 4.2.1 on the Touch.

I entirely agree with you... it's infuriating how Apple prevent you updating your perfectly capable hardware to a version number that would achieve fairly basic functionality, such as accessing an itunes server from a device that's already got itunes, wireless, and AppleTV... I've just got my iOS 4.2.1 device, and read somewhere that Home Sharing worked with iOS 4.. rather than 4.3. Pants.

This isn't really what you're after, but the best I could find was the free SimpleDaap app, which will play an album from an itunes home share, and that's about it. It has a shuffle button too, but on mine, the tracks arrive in a random order already, so shuffle doesn't do much - that may be something to do with my NAS that hosts the itunes server.
