I currently have an Imac version OSX 10.6.8 Must I upgrade to Lion in order to move to iCloud?

Not necessarily, but if you don't you will not be able to use your iCloud calendars and contacts with iCal and address book on your Mac. You will however be able to access them through the web interface at iCloud.com
