Q: How do I add a device to my itunes account?

This section on managing devices only explains how to remove a device from your account. My son just got an iphone and I want to add his iphone to my account so that I can share my music with him. How do I do this?

thank you!

Sign into the account on the device.

Devices are neither added to nor deleted from accounts.

    Computers are authorized for accounts.

I've already done this. But his phone is not showing up as being connected to my itunes account under devices. Only my phone shows up. And when I plug his phone into my laptop, I can't copy any music to his phone. I am wondering if I sync just the music, will his whole phone content get synced (calendars, apps, contacts etc.) or will just the music be affected?

I have synced my son's ipod before with my account and all of my contacts went onto his phone.

Sorry, I am new at this and I don't find this whole itunes thing to be too intuitive. It's trickier than it looks!

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it!

It will only show in iTunes while physically connected.  The exception to this is if Wi-Fi syncing is enabled for the device.

When plugging it in via the sync cable, it shows as connected, correct?

On the device, is it signed with the same Apple ID as on the computer?  Has it ever been synced with another computer?

I have the iphone plugged into my laptop via the white usb cable (syncing cable?) and it is showing up under the Devices on the left hand side of the itunes screen. But I can't drag any music over.

I don't believe this phone has yet been synced with any other computer or account. Any apps purchased were purchased via my account. You asked if the device is signed on with the same apple ID as on the computer. How do I check this?

If you want to drag and drop ( I do not reccommend this), then you must check the manually manage music box.

If you click Support at the top of this page, then click manuals, you will find the manual.  It will help you.

When I click on "manually manage music" it says that the device is synced to another library, which is not true so not sure why it is saying this. However, it then gives a message of "Do yo wnat to erase this iphone and syc with this itunes library?" if I click on "erase and sync" does that mean that everything will now be erased and synced with my current library (including apps, calendar, and contacts etc.) or does it just apply to the music?

This has absolutely nothing to do with the thread to which you replied.

Instead of digging up a completely unrelated 18month old thread, start your own thread.
