Interesting issue out of the blue on my itouch 3rd gen. No volume control without headphones plugged in. With phones plugged in I can your touch screen or physical up/down buttons to control volume. Without headphones neither way works and volume is zero.

What do you mean by the volume is zero? Do you mean it's turned all the way down? What have you done so far to try and troubleshoot the situation?

I can not get the volume to move off of no sound. Shows volume all the way done. I can not control either volume control to change it without headphones in...so it is not a hardware issue. So far I have reset and reloaded the iOS v 5.01..

Actually, that is a pretty good sign of a hardware failure/damage. Is a reset, restore, or restore from backup did not resolve the issue, you know it's not software related. You'll need to have the iPod serviced or replaced either by Apple or a third party service center.

How do you figure? I CAN control with side volume and touch screen with the headphones in... So the hardware is fine..
The hardware to control the volume is okay, but not the actual audiochip hardware itself.
