Is it harmful to use a dead battery that says "replace now"?

My battery died yesterday (all LEDs blinking 5 times) and when I turn on my computer, it says "not charging" and "replace now". I'm a student with not a lot of cash so I can't buy a battery at the moment. Will plugging in the AC adapter do fne for now or does "replace now" mean I really have to replace now or my computer may suffer in other ways?

Also, my computer date and time resets each time I log in...what's up with that?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Replace the battery as soon as possible.

When battery is not working, computer date and time resets each login/restart time.

That is normal behavior.

A battery is cheaper to purchase than a computer. You do the math! 😝

As the link provided bt CMCSK indicates, one can use the MBP without the battery with the caveat mentioned by Dominic23. It just that if the battery should rupture, it may create an unpleasent situation for your MBP and you and as CMCSK said "You do the math!"
