Can we just recap on what we have here. Are you saying that the TV receiver connects to the surroundsound system and then to the TV, that's how I would expect it to be. Does the surround sound system have any HDMI ports or optical audio input ports.

I have a Bose Lifestyle DVR III Surround Sound(Not HD)
I just purchased an Apple TV and am trying to hook it up.
Bose told me to run HDMI cable to Apple from TV and also HDMI cable to Direct TV
and Optical Audio from TV to Bose. Problem is I have only one HDMI slot on the back of my tv
The problem is I don't understand what your sound system does or whether it is a full sound system for a home theatre setup. Generally speaking all peripherals should be connected to the sound system, which is then connected to the TV itself. Do you have a link to the particular sound system that you have.

From the literature I found about your sound system, you need to connect the Apple TV to the TV via HDMI (if you don't have enough pots, you'll need to get a switch) and then connect the Apple TV to the bose with an optical audio cable.
