Soundcard for a 2006 MacPro Quad Core 1,1?

Hello,

I was hoping someone might be able to direct me to a manufacterer of a sound card that will work in my 2006 MacPro 1,1 Quad Core. I listen to nearly all of my music from my computer. I've ripped a good bit of my CD collection at either 192kbps or 320 and I've got the MacPro plugged in to an Onkyo AV Reciever. I'm mearly a listener of music, I do not create it.

I'm wondering if there is a mid range sound card that is compatible with the MacPro. In my Dell, I have a Creative X-Fi Extreme Music card installed. Checking Creative's site I saw no Mac compatible hardware. If I thought it would work I would just drop that card in the MP.

Can anyone recommend a card that won't break the bank (or my walllet for that matter)?

Use your optical out to a quality amplfier with quality speakers.

That is all that one needs for audiophile sound.

The MP optical outputs 5:1 surround.

My setup is optical out to an Onkyo amp, Klipsch and Infinity speakers with Infinity sub.

Sound card, what?

If I thought it would work I would just drop that card in the MP.

If you must have a sound card, install Windows and a PCIe Sound card.

Exactly so. There used to be one*, but now there is nothing. So-maybe get a good set of speakers and optical out, and that should work okay. If you want to mess around with something called the HD Audio Rush (the only external sound card I've seen which might work with your Mac Pro)....

otherwise that's it. I had the same question, too, a long time ago, and unless you're willing to spend a ton of money, that's the best that there is
