Q: Can Aperture 3 read Raw files from Canon G1X?

Is Aperture 3 capable of reading Raw files from a Canon G1X?

I'm currently using an elderly version of IPhoto, having resisted upgrading because of negative feedback about the latest version. My IPhoto version cannot read the Raw files from the G1X. I also tried importing one into Picassa, but the colours looked completely wierd.

I'm now considering buying Aperture 3 but will maybe wait until:

a. Aperture 4 is released and;

b. I know that Aperture can indeed read the Raw files from the G1X.

Any help/advice gratefully received.

    see this list:

Aperture 3: Wide raw support for leading cameras:

    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html

Your camera is supported by Aperture 3.

P.S. and the camera is supported by MacOS X 10.7.4.,

see: OS X Lion: Supported digital camera RAW formats

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757

What is your MacOS version? Perhaps upgrading to 10.7.4 should make the raw support available in iPhoto too.

    Regards

Keep in mind that Aperture is not an upgraded iPhoto. If iPhoto is meeting your needs upgrading to the latest version might be a better option for you.

Aperture will require a rethinking of your workflow and while getting it running out of the box isn't to bad using it to its full potential will require time on your part to learn it.

I'd suggest you post to the iPhoto list with any questions or concerns you might have about the latest version of iPhoto and Lion and see what they have to say.

Given the price of iPhoto in the App Store ($15 US) and the fact that the Aperture trial is no longer available (you'd have to pay $80 to see if Aperture is right for you) it might be worth your while to get the latest iPhoto and see if it works for you.

    regards

    Hello leoni and Frank Caggiano,

Many thanks for your swift responses to my question.

Leoni, my OS version is 10.7.4 but my IPhoto is 6.0.6, which is very old. I really like the layout of this version and haven't upgraded as there was a lot of negative feed back on the Apple website about the later version.

Frank, I totally take on board what you say about needing to learn Aperture. I had the original version, and gave up on it in favour of IPhoto.

I'll follow your suggestion and post on the IPhoto list.

    with thanks again,

Remember, this is an emergency room. People come here to report problems. Most folks *don't* have issues with the new iPhoto, including me.
