Magnet mount for iPod Mini?

I am making a custom mount for holding my iPod Mini in my car. Currently I attach the Mini to the mount using the clip that came with the iPod. I don't want to use Velcro since I don't want to apply any adhesive to the back of the iPod. For my cell phone, I have a small, round rubberized magnet attached to my dash. A metal strip attached to the phone's clip holds the phone to the magnet. I thought that this might be a way to hold the Mini to the mount, so I tried sticking the iPod to the magnet on the dash. The strongest attraction was at a point on the back of the Mini between the iPod logo and 4GB. After testing the strength of the attachment a few times, I began to wonder if this was not the smartest thing to do. Fortunately, all my tunes are still there and the iPod still functions properly. My question is, can a small magnet placed close to an iPod possibly damage it or the data on the drive? We're not talking MRI strength magnets, just one of those rubberized jobs about as big around as a quarter and twice as thick. If it can't damage the iPod or its drive, this would be a great way of attaching it to the mount I made and not require applying anything sticky to it.

Yes. A magnet strong enough to hold the iPod in place would most likely be stron enough to damage the hard drive inside.

Here's what I did to mount my iPod; I bought an armband & removed the strap. Then, I attached velcro to the bracket part & my dashboard. This way, I clip the iPod into the bracket and attach it to the dash with velcro without having to put the velcro directly on my iPod. It works well for me.

Cheers!
