Youtube on an ibook g4??

Hi my daughter recently bought an ibook g4 and she would like to browse on youtube but she has found that it doesn't run well. I think it runs on Mac OS X 10.4.10 but i'm not sure what leopard and lion etc is. If anyone could recommend any apps or suggestions for this (preferrably free!) then I'd be very grateful, Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

Which exact iBook model is it?

You can choose from this list:

Which version of the operating system is it running now? If it's really Mac OS X 10.4.10, it could be updated to 10.4.11.

How much RAM is installed? Maximizing the iBook's RAM can help.

What kind of optical drive does it have? (CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, Combo, or SuperDrive?)

Also, I've found that Firefox sometimes works better than Safari for viewing YouTube videos.

Find the video you want to watch on YouTube. Then restart the computer. (This clears the RAM so that it is all available for watching the video.) Relaunch your browser, and select the video from the browser's history. Don't have any other applications running except your browser when you're attempting to watch YouTube videos.

Tell her good luck with it.

Hello,

You will not have a great deal of luck with YouTube on even the fastest iBook. I have a G4 PowerBook running 1.33Ghz and that will play back YouTube but its very glitchy. The reason for this extends to the fact that web technologies like flash have move forward since 2005. I find that Camino works a little better with YouTube on a PPC mac, but it's not great. I've not yet found a successful solution to playing back YouTube videos without it being glitchy on an iBook.

Best of luck

Try Mactubes. It's for Intel or PPC Mac's. Works great on my G4 eMac.

System requirements

  • Only for Mac OS X.
  • Universal binary application supported PowerPC / Intel(R) processor. (Maybe)
  • Mac OS X 10.4.2 or higher / 10.5 /10.6 / 10.7 or higher.(Maybe)
  • Safari 2.0 or higher / Adobe Flash Player Plug-ins 9.0 or higher
  • Safari 4.0 or higher / QuickTime 7.6 or higher (for "Video Player / QuickTime Player")

When downloading such software, I try to download from a well-known Mac software site. I always worry that sites may add something to the download that I don't want on my Mac. (I don't know that this would happen, but I fear that it might.)

That said, here is the download link at MacUpdate:

I totally understand, Ronda. 🙂 I always Google the heck out of a program before I download it to find out if it's reputable and if it has any potential adware or other baddies I don't want. I have flown through the install of a program before in a hurry just to find out I did not "uncheck yes" to install some toolbar or some other garbage I didn't want. 😀

The link I posted is for the actual web site of the developer of MacTubes.
