Q: Issues with new Firewire Drives/Time Machine

Hello,

I recently purchased 2 Glyph Technologies GPT50 3TB 7200RPM hard drives and I am having multiple issues copying data to and from both drives.

I am plugging the drives via FireWire 800 into a 2x2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro with 64 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 memory. The system is running OS X 10.7.4.

When I begin to copy files, the procedure works for about about 10-30 minutes until I get this message:

"The operation can't be completed because the item "x" is in use." ("X" being the files I am trying to copy). I am not running any other applications.

I also can't get Apple's Time Machine to work with either drive -- the procedure churns along for about 30 minutes until I get this error message:

"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."

After these errors, I am unable to open any files on the drive, or copy any other files to the drive. I also have trouble ejecting the drive -- I have to shut down my system and turn the drive off, then turn it back on and re-start my computer. The drive mounts after that but when I try copying again, I get hit with the same errors.

I've swapped out the FireWire 800 cable, and I've tried running Apple's Disk Utility to check for any drive problems -- haven't found any issues. I've also reformatted the drives using Mac Extended (Journaled), but this doesn't solve the problem. Trying to think of other important info -- according to Disk Ulitility, S.M.A.R.T. Status is not supported on these drives, and the partition map scheme for both is GUID Partition Table.

I have lots of other Glyph Tech drives currently and all of them are operating fine and can copy the same files I'm trying to copy.

Hoping there are solutions out there for me to try, and of course I'm happy to answer any questions to try and find a solution.

Thanks!

Dan

Some enclosures cannot handle drives larger that 2.2TB. It is a limitation of the chips in the enclosures.

A Restart often clear the "Busy" flags on source files, if that is the issue.

There are ways to track down Time Machine error messages and find out exactly which files are causing the problems.

    Thanks for the fast response.

The drives I'm using are external drives, manufactured by Glyph, and I haven't done any modificatons, so I'm sure the chips inside can handle 3 TBs. Here are the specs:

    http://www.glyphtech.com/products/gpt50/#/images/products/gpt50-gallery-33smalle r.jpg

Restarting my system does allow me to begin the process of either copying files or attemping a Time Machine backup, but both the backup and the copying fails, usually about a half-hour into the process.

Is there a specfic method of tracking down Time Machine error messages that you can recommend that will help troubleshoot my issues? When I'm manually copying files, it doesn't seem to matter which files I copy -- the process inevitably fails, with the same "The operation can't be completed because the item "x" is in use" error message.

Do not be put off by the LOOK of complexity -- Pondini makes it all accessible, his explanations are great.

Thanks for the link. I downloaded the Time Machine Error Log widget and just got another failed backup. The error message in the Finder was:

"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."

I'm also copying and pasting from the crash log on the widget -- I'm hoping this can help me troubleshoot my issue(s)?

It looks to me like you have permissions problems, especially on the Boot Drive.

I suggest you run Disk Utility.

In almsot every other case, the function to use is "Repair disk" or in a pinch, "Verify disk". No harm in doing that anyway.

In this case, use "Repair permissions" and run it "live" in the running Mac OS X.

That's pretty strange.  Suddenly, Time Machine can't write to the (hidden) log it makes on the backup drive (it created it and wrote many messages to it earlier).

"Resource busy" sounds like some other process has locked it.  Most likely, that's some 3rd-party app.

Followed by other problems writing to the drive:

    Error: (-47) SrcErr:NO Copying /Users/dkanemoto/Music/iTunes/Music Soundtracks (backed up)/Space Mountain/Space Mountain 2005 Anaheim & Hong Kong - exit by Michael Giacchino.mp3 to /Volumes/Vault Backup B/Backups.backupdb/Titanville/2012-06-11-200610.inProgress/26968624-7758-48B9-B 0C0-F1394747A156/Speed Demon/Users/dkanemoto/Music/iTunes/Music Soundtracks (backed up)/Space Mountain

    Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/Vault Backup B/Backups.backupdb/Titanville size:37

Are you running any anti-virus software?

Any utilities that came with the drive?

    Any disk/system monitoring apps?

    Hi all,

Thanks for the info. I've checked my system for 3rd party apps -- I went to Users & Groups in System Preferences and checked my login items. There were 2 apps running -- Dropbox and iTunes Helper.

I've disabled both apps and I'll give it another try. (Is there another way to check if a 3rd party app is running in the background, an app I might be missing?)

I'm not running any anti-virus software, drive utilities, or disk/sytem monitoring apps, as far as I know.

Regarding repairing disk permissions -- I've repaired them over and over and tried to use Time Machine, and the program still hangs on its initial sync. Activity Monitor (in your Applications/Utilities folder).  Be sure it shows "All Processes" in the toolbar.

There will be a LOT of them; you'll recognize a few Process Names (Safari, Finder, etc.), but most are background jobs run by your Mac.   http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all has some info on most of them (I'm not sure it's entirely up to date).

Sort the list by Process Name (click in the title bar) and look for anything with a name similar to the brand or model of the HDs in question.

I'm not running any anti-virus software, drive utilities, or disk/sytem monitoring apps, as far as I know.

Good.  Assuming you bought the Mac new, and nobody else has installed anything, there's probably no such things running.

Regarding repairing disk permissions -- I've repaired them over and over

This doesn't seem to be a permissions issue.  Time Machine backups (the backupd process) runs as the "root" user, which has permission to everything by default.

I do notice that I have to repair the same permissions over and over again -- they still have to be repaired no matter how many times I try.

You should run that only while running from your internal HD (not your Recovery HD, a "clone," or other OSX volume).  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452

Some (perhaps most) of those messages can be ignored anyway.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448

    From your earlier post:

I have lots of other Glyph Tech drives currently and all of them are operating fine and can copy the same files I'm trying to copy.

That certainly sounds like some sort of problem with these particular drives, but it sounds like everything's right as far as formatting.  Since you formatted them yourself, it can't be a format or duplicate UUID problem.

That's a multi-interface drive, right?  Try connecting via USB, just to rule out a FireWire problem.

Have you tried different port(s), cable(s), and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one part may not make good contact in another)?  Are they connected directly to your Mac (no hubs, daisy-chaining, etc)?

Can you try one of the other, "good" drives with Time Machine?

I had the exact same problems that you describe with Glyph drives aborting copying!!

I just tried quitting Google Drive and quitting Dropbox BEFORE mounting the Glyph drive.   And so far, so good, the drive is working without any errors!

Makes me wonder whether Google was "looking" at one of my files while I was trying to copy from one drive to another and that was causing the error message "file in use".

I have this same problem, it's driving me crazy! I maintain several Mac Pros. I used the same type of drive, Fantom, to clone all the machines. I had two that kept getting this error! One of them finally cloned on maybe the 20th try, and the other has gotten as far as 98% before crashing, but it still won't go! I quit all non-essential tasks, repaired and verified the disks and permissions multiple times, but still nothing! I, like you, don't use antivirus or have any scheduled disk utilities. Also, I noticed it's never the same file that causes it, even though most of the time it crashes at about the half hour mark. I'm going to get on the phone with Apple tomorrow and hopefully figure this out. If I find anything, I'll let you know.

P.S.- I also can't unmount the drive after it fails, its literally the exact same problem.
