I can't believe Apple has taken away color icons, not only in Aperture, but in iTunes, Finder, etc. The switch to the dull linen sign-in screen was bad enough!

Not only is monochrome horribly boring and ugly, it makes my workflow more difficult.  Icons that were once easily recognized by their color must now be searched for!!! This is especially troubling to those of us who are not as familiar with Aperture's icons as those with more experience. I feel especially sorry for those just learning the program. Colors made it so much easier to recognize and distinguish between folders, albums, and projects.

For the first time ever, I am very disillusioned with Apple. It feels like we've gone back to the dark ages! Didn't it ever occur to anyone at Apple that those who love photography and the wonderful world of color might be less than happy being cast back into a monochrome world? Please at least give us a choice!!!!

I am so appalled by this change that I am seriously considering going back to using Lightroom with it's wonderful dark interface, even though I would sorely miss many features in Aperture, especially it's slideshow feature. It would also be hard to get by without  Photo Stream, but I'm sure there must be some workaround. At any rate, I just downloaded the trial version of Lightroom 4 and it looks wonderful in comparison to Aperture and all of it's monotonous grey!

P.S. I saw a good analogy posted somewhere on this subject asking how you would like to try finding your car in a parking lot filled with only gray cars!  That's pretty much how I feel using Aperture, Finder, and iTunes these days!!!

Before you even consider doing any of this, make a backup copy of your Aperture application.

The icons are inside the Aperture application. Ctrl-click the Application icon in the Finder, select "Show package contents".

    Open the folder "Resources".

You will find all icons as tiff-images there. If you edit and color them, take care not to change the filename and the pixel-size.

I have put a set of colored icons to replace some icons with colored variant here for download:

I didn't figure out how to replace the grey icons in the navigator yet (top right corner).  Any idea?

I did not even try to. icons that are always in exactly the same place are static do not need the color as as the icons in the library inspector. These may change there position and are harder to find.

I feel like I'm back to the days of the old black and white Mac Classic.  It was very dramatic and incredibly helpful when color icons first came out.

I'm sure in a few iterations they'll change their mind and go back to color.  Then it will be listed as "new" feature!
