Kernel Panic After Thunderbolt Update

I have a one year old MBP. A few minutes ago I installed the Thunderbolt Update that Apple released today. At the conclusion of the update, it said it had failed to install and that I needed to restart the Mac. On doing so, I got a kernel panic. And now every time I try to boot, I get a kernel panic. I'm dead. Ideas?

We got the same problem with iMac 27" i7 3.4GB


no way to stop kernel panic even with new install disc ... took it to our apple seller who says - cause this is a software problem Apple will charge you !!!!


this is incredible - Apple causes a extreme serious software problem and CHECK THE CUSTOMER for!

Thanks to the posters on here for suggesting doing the 10.7.4 Combo update as a quicker fix than having to install Lion. I used my old Macboom pro connected by a firwire lead and downloaded the Combo (10 minutes) then installed it on my update ruined Mac (10 minutes) then it booted fine. Although it does sem the finder is running slower than normal.


Apple should be utterly ashamed of themselves for this. My attitude toward them has changed significantly as a result of this, and I no longer place the trust in them I originally had. I know that means nothing to them, but it means everything to me.


So many people on this board were really helpful but I could have done without a few of the Mac Fanboys haunting the place the moment it kicked off with cut and paste solutions (which turned out to be the worst way of fixing it) and then telling me it was all my fault the update ruined my sysem, and not Apple's.

I think I'm having the same issue, although I have a 2011 iMac (not a MBP). I got the Kernel Panic screen after I tried to install the latest updates from Apple. I then took it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy, who were not very encouraging and said they would probably have to reformat my hard drive and I would lose all my data. And no it's not backed up. (I promise to in the future). So I went and rescued it from them. A friend of mine suggested I go online and research it which is where I found this helpful forum. I was trying to use the re-install option, but when I get to the window that says; Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X, the 'Recovery HD' option is grayed out and shows to be locked, and it shows only 140.3 MBs available. The 'Untitled' option, however, shows to be available. I'm afraid to use it though because people have specifically said to select the Recovery HD option. By the way, it never asked me to enter credentials, although it said that it was authorizing my eligibility. Any suggestions? I have an appointment with the Genius Bar tomorrow morning but had new hope that I could fix it myself! Thanks!

The reinstall is supposed to be initiated while booted up from the recovery partition. You will need a network connection and a lot of time.


If you have access to another Lion machine with a Firewire port, you could boot your problem machine into target disk mode and connect it via firewire to the other machine, then try installing the OS X 10.7.4 combo update from Apples support downloads. That tends to be the fastest route to recovery if there is nothing otherwise wrong with your machine.


I say, "if there is nothing otherwise wrong with your machine" because your reference to 'The "Untitled" option,..' is somewhat worrying. Generally the target hard drive's name appears instead of "untitled".


Better let the Genius Bar tech have a look at it.

The reason I'm worried about them wanting to charge me; I called Apple Support earlier and even though I told the person answering the phone that this problem was caused by a faulty update from Apple, she said well that might very well be true but if you use Apple Support you have to pay for that service. But I will definitely vigorously make my case when I go in tomorrow morning.

There should be no need to reformat your hard drive! Seems to me that you were doing the right thing. You are booted from the Recovery HD and need to reinstall Lion to the other partition, which is why the Recovery HD is greyed out & locked. So reinstall Lion to the "Untitled" partition; but first perform a "Repair" and "Repair Permissions" using the Disk Utility on the Recovery HD. Downloading Lion may take some time (for me around 40 minutes; but I have a 20Mbit connection)


It's a slight worry that the other partition is "Untitled" - I can't remember what mine said; but I think it ought to say the OS X version.

I think that is a real problem that Apple needs to address. The support system needs a triage system and needs to be more supportive of help applied. I could see if I was getting a service, but to get aid from a patch they deployed causing the error. You should get paid as a beta tester, because clearly that patch was not ready for deployment. Change the world, support you customers at a price. That doesn't sound like the message I was hearing at the keynote. They need to really look into this.

This is first apple product i had, can not wait for days for them to check up whats the problem, exams next week. I told apple staffs, he was helpful to refer to a apple technician. Technician knew what's the problem, and ask if it's under warranty or not, then say software isnot cover. Problem is that apple has a closed system, even for update. I can choice to update or not, i can check online, but anyone of you guys know what to update? Technical parts is fine, but it's service attitude made me feel money is only matter. It's a simple thing to reboot, where is educational aspect mentioned by apple's technician? By the way, apple has responsible for this issue too, pretty sure somewhere there are ppl been charged with this problem!

I haven't waded through all twelve pages of this thread and haven't had the problem myself, not having Thunderbolt built in, but your link identifies the problematic file as "IONetworkingFamily.kext". Search utilities such as EasyFind can quickly locate that file even though hidden. If you have a bootable backup which this update hasn't been applied to, has anyone tried booting from the backup and than replacing the defective file on your regular boot drive with the working version on the backup? Temporarily changing permissions may be necessary but it seems like a direct and simple fix.


My apologies if anyone else has already suggested or tried this.

I think someone already tried this earlier on and it didn't help. Probably best to follow the one of the three suggestions as there may be other files affected and they'll at least get it back to a stable state. Certainly I'd apply the 10.7.4 combo updater if replacing that one kext got it to restart.

Let me just say, I am so happy to hear that I'm not alone with the 'kernel panic' after the recent update. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out exactly what I did to f*@k up my mac; especially considering all I can remember is opening a beer, awaking my iMac from "sleep", clicking "install and restart now" from the usual update pop-up, and taking a drink. Shortly afterward, a window appeared that briefly described the failure of some software from installing correctly; software I don't know much about, but I know I was doing just fine without. I cleared the message and continued with the restart . . . sigh. Well, not to spoil any semblence of a climactic ending to the story but. . . same ole, same ole here. . . I was able to 'semi' log in via my password as the administrator but after that the show sucked. Nothing but a gray screen, apple, and a status wheel that just spinned around and around and around. . . My guest account worked; however, this accretion was nothing more than a disapppointing tease (similar to a peek on the working side the glory hole, but I can only imagine.). Anyway, long story short. . .(sort of) I initiated a repair disk via recovery mode with no luck; a corrupted hardrive was the culprit. leading me to the same conclusion as the rest of you. I initiated a re-install/recovery of Lion OS X. . . The worst part. . . I don't have my data backed up on anything and there is still almost 4 hours left before the truth is uveiled.


Does recovery recover the files that I had on my mysteriously "corrupted" hardrive or am I **** out of luck? The anwser to lifes greatest question is within those files. . . I hope it's not lost forever; I can't remember what it was for the life of me! Maybe the question is the question. . . maybe the question is ". . . what is life's greatest question?" Anyway, if anyone know's the answer I'm done searching. I'm ready for a fish dinner that I didn't have to catch. thanks all
