Q: Kernel Panic After Thunderbolt Update

I have a one year old MBP.  A few minutes ago I installed the Thunderbolt Update that Apple released today.  At the conclusion of the update, it said it had failed to install and that I needed to restart the Mac.  On doing so, I got a kernel panic.  And now every time I try to boot, I get a kernel panic.  I'm dead.  Ideas?

Thanks.

This worked for me too! I got a call back from AppleCare just as I was trying this fix. This is exactly what the tech told me to do. So now Lion is downloading and I am not installing the update for a few days till they can find out what is causing this problem.

    Thanks for your assistance!

Same thing on an iMac here: screenshot: http://mg1.co/4tiJ

You'd think they'd pull the update.

Same exact problem. Had upgraded a client's 2011 iMac to 10.7.4 and was about to make a clean getaway when I ran SU one more time and was alerted to a new iPhoto and T-bolt update. So I blithely ran them and the bloody machine KP'd from the gate. Arrgh!

Fortunately she had a TM backup from an hour or two previous so I could recover the machine Lion included. But this is a nasty development to be sure.

    Where is the Q.C., Apple?

I'm glad it worked out.  I'll put the steps below again for others who join this discussion late and to clarify as I was typing on a phone last night while my MBP was re-installing.

    1) Hold in command-r while rebooting (or from cold start) to boot to the recovery partition.

    2) Chose re-install mac osx

    3) Enter appleID credentials

    4) After the re-install is complete (may take a while depending on your intenet connection etc) all your files, preferences, and software will be there, you shouldn't lose anything.

    5) DO NOT reattempt the Thunderbolt update.  You can update the iPhoto and other updates that Software Update finds...just DO NOT check the Thunderbolt one or you will be at step one again.

    Cheers.

Apple support assure me that this is a hardware problem and booked an appointment for me at the genius bar.

Tried to tell them that it appeared lots of people were having this problem and perhaps they could talk to second or third line support. They firmly told me I needed to get my machine fixed!!

Will do my second lion re-install of the day and then not install the firmware update!

    Mark

I can also confirm that your solution did worked for me. It took me for about 30min installing combo update from another mac over FW800. All data and apps were there.

    thanks

You definitly do not have a hardware problem.  Just don't run that thunderbolt update after your second reinstall, I agree.  I'd bet not all the genius bar folks and support folks are aware of the specifics yet.  What will be interesting is how this plays out regarding fixing the issue.  People who are less tech savy or don't visit forum discussions may end up paying for repairs for something that they shouldn't have to.  It's not like Apple can issue a fix that pushes to those kernel panic(ed) machines for those who aren't aware of the re-install or combo re-apply fixes.

yeah!! that's stupid.. even I took my MBP to applecare and they just gave me an appointment for 13th June'12...

I kept asking for just 2 minutes of any Apple support engineer, just to get some pointers on the issue ... but seems AppleCare don't CARE anymore!!!

    Hello,

I can also confirm that this solution is working for me. I'm currently running the updates but all my files, photos, music and applications are all there. Stupid T'bold update!

    Thanks to all.

Apple has screwed me for the last time, and they've lost a customer on this one.

iPhoto didn't work for me at first, but after I did the software update from 10.7.3 (What the Lion restore installed) to 10.7.4, iPhoto is working fine.
