Retina Macbook Pro combined audio in/out?
Does the Retina Macbook Pro work with earphones with mics, i.e. does it have a combined 3.5mm audio in/out jack like the 13" MacBook Pro?

Yes.
Not to be rude, but on what evidence do you base that? I only ask because the tech specs page for the Retina MBP refers to the following:
"Headphone port
Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone
Support for audio line out"
Now isn't that iPhone headset with microphone different from almost all other headsets as it has a 4 contact TRRS connector instead of a 3 contact TRRS connector? And I'm not certain, but something tells me that a a 4 contact jack isn't necessarily compatible with a 3 contact connector. Can anyone confirm/deny whether the Retina MBP will work with regular 3-contact TRRS connector-equipped headphones?
...a TRRS connector is 4-contact, is it not? Tip, Ring, Ring, and Sleeve makes 4. TRS for stereo sound uses Left, Right, and Common/Ground. Add a mic to that, and you get TRRS, which to my knowledge is standard. A mono headset with a mic would have a 3-contact TRS connector.
Sorry, you're right, But is the jack the tip left, first ring right, second ring mic, and sleeve return arrangement sort...
...or tip left, first ring right, second ring return, and sleeve mic sort? I guess you could, in the worst case, get a TRRS converter, but I still do wonder.
sleeve is always ground, so the mic would be 2nd ring. That's why standard headphones work in the 13" MBP and iPhone/iPad. When there's no 2nd ring, the sleeve shorts it out, thus letting the device know there's no microphone.
I bought a TRRS Adapter for my Retina Macbook Pro but it does not work as expected. Although System Profiler states that the headphone connector is a combo connector (and Apple Website states it is compatible to iphone headsets)
According to http://www.nerdsonsite.com/blog/2012/08/16/mountain-lion-on-macbooks-incompatibl e-with-3-5mm-microphones/ this is a bug within Mountain Lion.
Since Apple does not allow me to download the specific Lion build that came with my Retina Macbook I cannot check wether it is indeed the TRRS Adapter or the Operating System that prevents the Combo connector from working. Even 10.8.1 did not address this issue. I do not own an iphone either.
Do you know wether a Bug report has been opened because of this problem?

With a headset from iphone 5 and current Mountain Lion on a Macbook Pro Retina the switching to external microphone works!
Yes and No..
Iphone headphone will, other headphones with built in mic less likely.
i belive this is due to:
most common 3.5mm mic jacks use the tip as the signal and the sleeve for the ground. Apple uses the sleeve for the mic and a common ground in the middle.
