Q: Unable to find driver for this platform \ ACPI\

I clicked on software update today and learned that there were updates that needed to be installed. I clicked on update and after some twenty minutes, it's asked to restart to install the updates. When it was done, I got this message on the screen UNABLE TO FIND DRIVER FOR THIS PLATFORM ACPI. YOU NEED TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON UNTIL IT TURNS OFF, THEN PRESS THE POWER BUTTON AGAIN.

I did this but it comes back to the same screen.

Help me please.

    kernel error.jpg

I have tried every scenario of option, shift, command key combinations with almost every letter of the alphabet as instructed from multiple forums that I've visited regarding this issue, including booting from a time machine backup, testing the hardware, and dusting off the original install disc that came with the computer in attempts to reinstall the OSX. I've had no success in initiating the recovery screen and this screen attached is the only screen that keeps appearing after every attempt no matter what I've tried. My response isn't to your initial issue or to provide any advice to help as I clearly can't provide any advice to help, but more so to Apple on whether this issue can be resolved and if so, how?  One final advice that I came across here http://www.mac-help.com/threads/my-first-kernel-panic.162620/ was to replace the RAM and I'm looking for feedback or input from Apple if this could potentially fix this issue before investing in the RAM.  Thanks, any advice would be greatly appreciated!
