For some time, after each start the items on the desktop are moved to other positions and the desktop background image will be reset from my own choice (photo) to a standard background.

Lately, at each start the system date would be reset to a date in 2001.

How can I  avoid all this?

Thanks

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

A likely reason for these symptoms is failure of the PRAM battery - however not all laptops have one, relying on the normal battery to retain parameters.  If you do have a PRAM battery which needs replacing you would need the services of an engineer unless you are confident about taking your laptop apart.
