FCE 4.0.1 Update Availability

FCE 4.0.1 Update Availability

I am installing FCE 4 on another desktop computer (Mac Pro) but software update does not show the 4.0.1 update. I realise I need to remove it from the original desktop machine to be license compliant but I am reluctant to do so until I can confirm a) the 4.0.1 update is still available and b) that if I use FCS Remover to completely uninstall FCE then Apple will see the deinstallation has occurred and that I will then be able to see the update when running software update on the new desktop.

I am grateful for any advice.

Is FCE installed at the top level of your Applications folder?

If it's not Software update won't see it.

Hi, yes FCE is at the top level in the applications directory. I had read your earlier replies to similar posts and checked that requirement was meet.

Might be a receipts quirk.

Delete the below receipt if it's in the Receipts folder and try again.

It shouldn't be unless somewhere along the line an update has occured or been Migrated.

System Drive>Library>Receipts>Final Cut Express 4.0.1 update pkg.

Hi, There is no receipt for 4.0.1 only for FinalCutExpress.pkg. This has been a totally clean install with the operating system reloaded and Final Cut 4.0 loaded from the installation Disk. It's a mystery as to why the update isn't showing. All other updates have been downloaded successfully.

The only thing the update does is to provide you with means to edit AVCHD.

If you don't use AVCHD you don't need it.

I suggest you use FCS Remover to delete this new installation and reinstall.

Incidentally, Apple does not keep tabs on you and will have no idea how many computers you have it installed on.

Mystery to me as well.

It's worth repairing permissions and a re-boot before you try a re-install.

If that does't work then a remove and reinstall as Ian suggests might sort it.

Hi, I have done all the suggested actions from Ian and yourself but the update still does not show. Greatly appreciate all the suggestions, I just wish Apple would release the update as a separately available download rather than through software update.

Unfortunately I do work with ACVHD hence my desire to get the update.

The FCE 4.0.1 update is available in Software Update. I can confirm that just two days ago I obtained it while doing various other updates to one of my Macs.

Tell us more about the Mac you are installing ... what model ... what versions of OS X, QuickTime, iLife (especially iMovie) and whether or not you have any other Pro Apps installed (Aperture, Logic, FCPro, FCPro-X etc.)

Sometimes the reason an update does not show up in Software Update is that there is some other update that needs to be installed first. What updates are listed when you run Software Update?

Also, FYI, Apple doesn't "see" or record your installation of FCE, so you don't need to be concerned about that. What does happen is that FCE looks on your local network to see if there is another copy running with the same serial number on another Mac.

Hi, thank you for your advice. I have tried all that was suggested and nothing worked so have resorted to cloning the drive that had FCE on it and using that in the Macpro. It all works just fine but was a rather drastic step to take.

Chris, I am having the same problem. I had to reinstall my OS and now I cannot find the update to 4.0.1 and my backed up projects won't open in my reinstalled FCE 4. I have tried to copy v 4.0.1 from my back up drive, but it won't launch, just throws an error message. Can you explain what you did?

Hi, sorry to be slow in replying. I had FCE installed on an IMAC where everything was working fine so I had to take a complete clone of the hard drive and use that to create a new startup drive. Very drastic but it worked.
