If Setting/General... delete Profiles is not an option for you.

About encrypted backups in iTunes - Apple Support

for me, this worked.

  1. On iOS Device Settings > General > Reset
  2. Tap Reset All Settings and enter your iOS passcode.

If you can’t remember the password for your encrypted backup

You can’t restore an encrypted backup without its password. With iOS 11 or later, you can make a new encrypted backup of your device by resetting the password. Here’s what to do:

  1. On your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset All Settings and enter your iOS passcode.
  3. Follow the steps to reset your settings. This won't affect your user data or passwords, but it will reset settings like display brightness, Home screen layout, and wallpaper. It also removes your encrypted backup password.
  4. Connect your device to iTunes again and create a new encrypted backup.

You won't be able to use previous encrypted backups, but you can back up your current data using iTunes and setting a new backup password. If you have a device with iOS 10 or earlier, you can't reset the password. In this case, try the following:

  • If someone else set up your device, ask them for the password.
  • Use an iCloud backup instead of iTunes. If you don't have an iCloud backup, you can make one.
  • Try using an older iTunes backup.

I came across this problem a few years back when I tried to manage my files using iMazing , that my iPhone backups were encrypted. I had never set this up and have no need for it. Plugging my phone into iTunes I tried to uncheck the Encrypt Local Backup box but was asked for a password. I tried all my old iTunes passwords, every other password that I have ever used and all the pins that I use.

No luck, and I just left it as it was.

Since then I bought an iPhone 6s and now after a few years I'm trying to move to a new Google Pixel. The Pixel is saying that my data is encrypted and so cant be transferred. Again I did not set this up on my new phone.

This time when I plug the phone in the Encrypt Local Backup box is greyed out. I have gone into General/ Settings, there are no profiles set up (I have not set any up and it is a personal phone not for work). I've gone in General/About/Cert Trust Settings and there are no certificates or profiles there just one Trust Store Version.

I have no VPN working on the phone and never have.

I deleted everything on my phone and restored it from an iCloud back (which I have never set to be encrypted) but again the box is greyed out and the phone comes up as encrypted on the Pixel 2

I've tried every trouble shooting post that I can find on here. Some fresh ideas would be appreciated.

It's an iPhone 6s running iOS 11.1.2 (15B202). I want to transfer my contacts, data and photos to my Pixel 2 (which Google claim should only take 15 mins but I'm not on my 4th day of trying)

You will never get a response from Apple unless you contact them directly. You do realize this is a user to user technical support forum, correct?

Have you tried changing the password to see if that makes the encypt option available to be unchecked?

It may also be necessary to delete any existing backups that have passwords, then uncheck the option and create a new backup.

It may also be necessary to delete any existing backups that have passwords, then uncheck the option and create a new backup. even after deleting the backup, unchecking option is freezed

Any other method? anyone ? 🙂
