Apple TV to Samsung DLP audio problems

I'm trying to connect a new ATV to an 8 yr old Samsung DLP TV. The video (Netflix) HDMI to DVI works. I connected audio out through converter to analog wires. I hear the sound effects when I switch icons on ATV but no audio on an actual video. I have tried changing the audio setting on the Apple TV to 16 bit but that did not work. The converter is a RadioShack Toslink to digital coax converter. Its a cheap converter but since I hear some sounds, I'm not sure if that is the problem. Any suggestions? Thank you!
