How do i erase a macbook pro and reset it to factory settings

I have an early 2009 macbook pro that i want to give to my nephew, i need to reset the laptop and put it back to factory settings, what is the correct procedure to do so.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7), 15 inch 2009

Use the orignal install dvd that came with your mb and boot from there.


Erase the drive and do a full reinstall to factory default.

When you insert your original installation disk, and go past the language selection and the agreement, you will see a menu bar on top. Click on Utilities, select Disk Utility and perform the 'Erase' function That will erase all of the user data on the disk. Then continue the installation process.


If you wish to retain your personal user data, back it up first to another HDD.
