Previews in 3.3

So what exactly is the change in 3.3 concerning RAW images, previews and the imbedded JPG?

In pre 3.3 version you had the option to use the imbedded JPG preview during import while Aperture created its preview to speed things up:

So what's different in 3.3?

Mac OS X (10.7.4), Aperture 3.2.3

But wouldn't that be a total disaster. The imbedded JPG is as we all know is created using the camera settings and, usually., looks nothing like the converted RAW image.

This is one of the leading questions we get here all the time from people just starting out shooting RAW. My image in Aperture looks nothing like what I saw on the camera screen and while I was importing it looked like that briefly then it changed.

If the imbedded JPG was used as the preview all the time the preview wouldn't match the converted RAW image. I sure hope this isn't what happens it will be extremely confusing.

But un that case you could have a situation where the Preview doesn't match the version.

An example: You import one RAW image into Aperture no preview is created the preview is the imbedded JPG, the Preview doesn;t match the converted RAW image Part of the import process is to create the first version of the image which matches the converted RAW image. No adjustments are done to this first version and it is this first version that you see in Aperture.

So was a preview generated for this first version or is the preview the imbedded JPG? You never made an adjustment to it, you never select it. If the Preview is the JPG then the preview doesn't match, if a preview was created when the first version is created then I don't sse any change from the previous behavior.

I'll be curious to try this out later when I can get to the system with 3.3. on it.

That is exactly what I am afraid of. The Prefeence panel contains a clear warning that the previews might not match.

Ah OK then I was right, what a mess. We thought explaining RAW before was tricky wait till we get the, "It looked just like what was in the camera before I adjusted the exposure 1/2 a stop. Now the colors are totally different!, WHAT HAPPENED?"

This is not going to end well, should have stayed on the bike!😢

True, the preview won't match Aperture's rendering (in particular, for color). But if you are checking composition and to an extent focus, it may be sufficient. And now you can use quick preview mode immediately, without having previews that are totally useless.

Color is totally malleable anyway, so it's not really important in judging photos to see if they're picks or not.

I made a test with the only camera I have available here - Aperture does not support the raw, so I had to convert it to dng. With the dngs I see no difference at all between the exported version and the preview dragged to the desktop:

The Camera Preview

The exported version, no adjustments.

All with Exposure Program "normal"

P.S. Trying to access the previews from Mail makes Mail.app crash regularly.
