iPad
Apple, please reconsider and allow iOS6 to run on iPad 1. Let users decide if the iOS6 speed is fast enough on the iPad 1. You will be alienating loyal customers if you continue your stance on iOS6 for the original iPad. This is not a good way to treat us. I like Apple products, and want to upgrade to a new iPad some day, but my iPad 1 works great, and I see no reason to buy new hardware when my iPad 1 works so well for everything I do on the device. I agree with the general sentiment that Apple is abandoning iPad 1 users. How long will it be before app developers stop supporting iOS5 and start writing apps for iOS6 only?
APPLE PLEASE RECONSIDER AND SUPPORT iPad 1 ON iOS6!
People, what are you talking about?
Are you really so uneducated that you think obsolete technology will continue to run the latest greatest software on hardware that is not able to perform the current functions.
I've read comments here like: unfair, I'll never buy Apple again.
Geez!
By your way of thinking, the Model T automobile should be able to do everything a Tesla should do.
Read Moore's Law.
You're just being unrealistic.
The point is not that Apple screwed you.
The point is that the iPad 1 simply cannot handle all the functionality of the latest chipset. Period.
@glennfromwimberly: educate me then on why the iPhone 3GS, which is older than the iPad 1, sorry, original iPad, got the upgrade, dispite having even less functionality than the original iPad and supporting less of the features (for the record, the original iPad uses an A4 CPU. the iPhone 3GS uses a generic ARM Cortex A8).
If your logic applies, then the upgrade would've only came out for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4.
In fact, the original iPad is based on the same processor as the iPhone 4, meaning that if the iPhone 4 can have iOS6, so can the original iPad.
There was also a beta release of iOS6 for the iPad, meaning that it does support iOS6.
And you know what? Just give us iOS6. I don't mind not having Siri, not having Youtube anymore (Apple's client was crap anyway, there's no sort by upload date feature when doing a search), and not having Maps. I just want my apps to still be usable, at least until I can afford a new 4th Gen iPad when that comes out. I refuse to buy a new iPad after this fiasco, since it's already 8 months into the launch and that will mean 8 months less of life out of it.
Moore's law is dead. So said Gordon Moore in 2005. You're 7 years out of date. Toss your hypothesis.
I believe what we're saying is that a 4 year old device is outdated and should be tossed for the latest and greatest. What we would like to see is software that can last longer than a 4 year cycle.
There's nothing wrong with Ipad 1, it would be nice to access new (or modified0 software for a 4 year old device. IOS 6.0 lite may be a start if the chipset is your argument.
My belief is that the more we toss away, the quicker manufacturers will produce, and the shorter product lifespans will shorten. CD's had a 20 year lifespan. Gone in favour of downloads, same goes with DVD"s (an even shorter lifespan). Sooner or later you may 'whine' about the lifespan of the OS on a tablet you purchased 3 days ago. Be careful where you tread.
Comparing a Model T to a Tesla is ubsurd. That's over 100 years in technology gains before the Tesla was born.
It's like comparing apples to oranges.
Also: Model T manufacturing lasted 19 years (no software updates required). There may be something to be said for analog over digital.
Ok, so here's the deal.
The iPad has an A4 chip, coupled with the same graphics card that is shared with both the 3GS and iPhone 4. The A4 chip is basically a Cortex-A8, repackaged differently. So it isn't much of a performance improvement. Also, the iPad has an even higher resolution than the iPhone 4, so that graphics card is under much higher stress than what is going inside the 3GS. The 3GS has the best of both worlds, powering a low-graphics screen, with a highly-capable graphics card. Because the 3GS and the iPhone 4 share the same graphics card, the 3GS is actually faster than the 4 in graphic intensive games.
But the main killer is RAM, if the chipset argument isn't good enough. The iPad has a mere 256 mb of ram while the iPhone 4 has 512. The 3GS also has 256, but it's display has 4 times less pixels, so applications use less ram. The 3GS thus has adequate RAM to sustain itself (although it is still seemingly tight at times), but the iPad simply doesn't have enough RAM. Infact, at launch, some reviewers noticed the iPad's inability to be able to keep Safari webpages saved in memory, simply because it didn't have enough RAM.
So while it might seem that the iPad's internals are powerful, for a tablet, the chipset and RAM is weak, and is suitable only for a low-end smartphone like the 3GS. The argument that the iPad can't sustain iOS 6 due to hardware seems legit to me, especially as a developer. While I may not be the best developer in the world, I try to do a good job in optimizing my apps, and even then, on my tester iPad running iOS 6, it always seems to be the first device (alongside the iPod touch 4th gen, another device with a high resolution, and only 256 mb of ram) that gets a low memory warning.
To the Toad - Well my friend, I understand your sentiments, but calling me "ubsurd" really doesn't take into account the years I spent at both Power Computing and at Apple.
7 years out of date am I, hmmmm.
You know it's funny, but in the last decade up to this week, I never saw you at any of the Apple facilities I worked at or visited across the planet.
Have you been on the production line, or to China?
Do you really understand the progression of technology?
Are you an engineer?
Do you work for Frog Design?
I've been with all these groups and I never saw you there.
The gist is this, tpulak has it pretty close.
The adoption and distribution rate of the iPad is like nothing the human race has ever encountered before.
The improvements and the design for future advancement paths is based on customer feedback, Frog Design's vision, an attempt to leapfrog the curve...and - well - you guys ain't seen nothing yet.
Trust me when I tell you - this isn't to screw you, but to advance as fast as can be done plausibly.
And yes - Moore said that about 2005 CPU design - that's why there are corollaries.
You're calling my comparisons absurd, rather speaks to your youth and lack of education.
But I forgive you.
Check this out before you speak about what you think you know:

RAMChYLD,
How typical.
Apple introduces something that revolutionizes the world in a way not seen heretofore.
But just because it doesn't meet with your approval, it's a fiasco.
A bit childish, don't you think?
Do you really think you can do better than a technology that has seen the fastest adoption rate in recorded human history?
Good luck with your other tablet products.
Why not stop your negative aspect and outlook, turn off the TV and read an engineering book before you criticize.
Three years ago, you didn't even know what a tablet was, unless you watched StarTrek.
And now you're mad at Apple?
When you've been on the production line and in the engineering meetings seeing people pour their hearts into working 18-20 hours a day to constantly improve products, then I think you might have a valid point.
Or maybe you think Apple should stick with Samsung, while they blatantly steal patents, reverse engineer software and steal by any other means.
And as for your beta - well if you're so smart, why not install it and see how long before you start complaining about your iPad just not being fast enough anymore.
Have you thought of selling it on Craigslist, taking the proceeds and asking your mommy for a bigger allowance so you can get another one?
Better yet, just switch on over to Android and good riddance.
Your negativity bespeaks your lack of education and certainly your lack of age or at least maturity.
Maybe if you were a little more positive, someone at Apple or Frog would listen to your reasonable input.
What - never heard of Frog? Go figure.
BTW - when I worked at Apple, I never saw you in any of the meetings or on the production line or on an overnight plane to China, now did I?
Please, please, please go on over to Samsung - you guys deserve each other.
> but to advance as fast as can be done plausibly.
And I think that's unfair. To advance so fast that people have to buy a new device every year.
The point is this: We want our devices to still be able to run the apps we need if the developers should drop IOS5 support (which from my experience and what is being posted to this thread, is already happening).
You're from England. The iPad is dirt cheap over there. I'm in Malaysia, and the iPad is ungodly expensive. It costs RM 1500 for the basic 16GB Wi-Fi only model. Heck, I had to take out a loan to pay for that darn thing because it costs almost two thirds of my monthly wages, and I'm unable to get one without a loan and have enough for my car fuel, expressway toll and food expenses. And I'm a IT sysadmin, which classifies as upper-middle-class.
Point is, not everyone of us can afford a new iPad every two years to keep up. And thus would like to squeeze a little bit more out of our device until we're ready.
> BTW - when I worked at Apple, I never saw you in any of the meetings or on the production line or on
> an overnight plane to China, now did I?
I never said I worked at Apple.
> Better yet, just switch on over to Android and good riddance.
I already have an android device. I use it in conjunction with my iPad.
*deep breaths*
I see what's happening here. You're trying to troll us who can't afford the new iPad.
> Your negativity bespeaks your lack of education and certainly your lack of age or at least maturity.
> Have you thought of selling it on Craigslist, taking the proceeds and asking your mommy for a bigger allowance so you can get another one?
That wasn't funny, hypocrite. One, you're insulting a people and yet you claim that you're more mature. Second, my just underwent cancer therapy. I, like the rest of my family members, took out whatever savings we had to help her. I'd rather my mom live then have her die over a new tablet.
Dude,
thank you for the more rational tone.
I certainly understand your feelings.
btw- - I'm from Texas and writing you from Austin as I speak.
I am also aware that prices are staggering for this technology overseas.
Trust me when I tell you, as I've set in on MANY meetings with even Malaysian counterparts.
The protectionist nature of the government there is the reason for the high prices, not Apple.
Having said that, I actually agree with you when you outline your argument so eloquently and rationally.
This is a compelling argument and I think Apple would do well to listen to you and, at least, extend iOS 5 support for the foreseeable future.
The historical truth is, that while the handwriting may be on the wall, you should still be in the loop for some time to come.
Apple is the only company with a strong history of continued support for previous OS technology.
Internally, the benchmark has istorically been around 5 yrs.
Our friends at Dell and Microsoft, etc, have never actually cared enough to even give people notice.
And hey, I'm not a fanboy. I'm also IT and a sr systems engineer, so I feel your pain brother.
I too, wish my iPad 1 could upgrade.
So let's make a rational argument for concurrent support, ala OS9 to OSx - remember?
Maybe, just maybe, if we use the right language, we can compel someone to pay attention.
Good luck.
Come visit in Austin someday, and we'll find you a good deal on Craigslist, n'est ce pas?
Not true RamChyld,
I never said you worked for Apple, I'm saying that I did.
I was just a little offended by the tone some took, implying that so many of us who worked so hard, are doing this on purpose to hurt people.
Brother, I can't afford a new one either.
But I don't blame Apple.
I look for solutions.
And not trolling you here.
I will honestly do anything I can to help you.
That's my heart.
That's my committment.
You are welcome in Austin, if and when you can visit.
I know it's an expensive ticket, but hey - no hotel and a free tour guide.
Hang in there - things are going to get better.
I agree brother.
Many of us are in the same situation here.
I just lost my mother to a car accident and we had to remove her from life support.
It has torn my family apart.
My oldest son has had 2 open heart surgeries and suffered permanent brain damage as a result.
The economy has faltered, and many of us are very close to bankruptcy and homelessness.
I feel your pain.
I share your anguish.
And you're right - something should change.
Something has to change.
I think it is very close to a time when the people of the world must stand together and DEMAND what is right.
I believe the iPhone and the iPad are playing, and will play an extremely important roll in the freedom of mankind from the selfish people that now think they control the world.
Here is the truth - and I want to know when the politicians of the world will begin speaking this:
When everyone has enough clean water to drink, food to eat and healthcare becomes a right - not a priviledge - then we can all move forward together.
Women MUST BE respected as equal participants in society ALL OVER THE WORLD.
WE MUST ALL DENOUNCE VIOLENCE in all its forms.
We CANNOT continue to allow killing in the name of ANY religion, anywhere in the world.
The time is now - speak up and have your voice heard in a clear and loud tone.
Please let me know anything, anything at all, that I may do to serve you.

I too apologize for my outburst. Sorry. I got to that post before your's came in.
> Second, my just underwent cancer therapy
I meant my mom underwent cancer therapy, sorry. I accidentally deleted off the word "mom" from the post.
I've pretty much come to term that no matter how much I post here, Apple will never listen. I'll survive. With any luck, my bank standing will be good enough when the next iPad launches in March and I'll be able to take out another loan.
Wow this is running deep! I only wanted to express the concern of wanting a better lifespan from my apple products like I used to!
Dear Friend,
I understand your frustration.
No apologies necessary.
I support your right to express yourself and I'm glad to know your experiences.
Let me tell you - the people at Apple DO listen.
They sit in meetings daily and review the comments here in the forums.
Apple is a unique company with a vision to change the world.
And they are doing it.
Please keep posting, please keep commenting.
They ARE listening and your opinion DOES make a difference and it DOES count.
You are welcome in my home and I want to here how this turns out for you.
Please send my greetings to your family and my best wishes to your mother.
You will be in my thoughts.
Sincerely - Glenn
