I got the iPad 1 when it first came out and I really enjoy the device. I was very disappointed when I found out I couldn't upgrade it with the new iOS 6. I believe we (iPad 1owner) should be allowed to that upgrad as I don't believe the iPad 1 is an old device and the new features would just make it better.

The worse part , as mentioned all above, is that the iPhone 3GS still can get the upgrade, I wouldn't have been so disappointed if 3GS wasnt in the list.

Apple just being greedy, and forcing us to change our device. As after sometime we might not even been able to use some apps as they ain't compatible...

Yep, perhaps the worst part will be outdated browser: google services support only the last two versions of each browser, so in couple of years when new web standards will become popular (like HTML5.1), you won't be able to open some sites.

You are wrong. I bought the iPad because I needed it because of a few apps which I that is crucial to me.

Seriously, why don't you send each of us US$500 so we can buy a new iPad instead? Many of us can't afford it even if we wanted to (I still remember that story about some kid in China selling off both his kidneys in the black market just to buy an iPad 2, and now I'm seriously considering the same given that those apps are crucial to me and the developer has refused to release Android versions of the App. iPads are NOT cheap in Malaysia) and some of us are just finishing paying off the **** thing! And while you're at it, send the rest of your money to those poor kids in India, Tibet, Mongolia, etc. who needs it more than you and your delusional "omgnewshinytoy!buy!"

I wouldn't be so butthurt if 1: the iPhone 3GS, which came out a whole year before the iPad, getting iOS6, 2: The fact that Malaysia got the iPad six (****, almost seven) months late, 3: The developer of the apps released Android versions of said apps, and 4: The iPad wasn't such an expensive device - US$500? My iPad cost me RM1800 in Malaysian money. I had to take out a loan to buy the **** thing. And oh, 5: The fact that there was a developer preview of iOS6 for the iPad, and it was said to be working well.

By jailbreaking, you are only hurting yourself by ruining your iPad. The better and unharmful solution is to buy another tablet or newer iPad.

To the rest of you:

If you think you are teaching Apple some sort of lesson by never buying Apple products again, you're wrong. If Apple supported the iPad 1 forever and ever, then you STILL wouldn't buy a new iPad if your old one was supported. Everything becomes outdated, but there's still a silly notion floating around that Apple has nuked your iPads and they no longer work on iOS 5.whatever.

If you think thousands of disgruntled customers will not hurt Apple then that is where you are wrong.

Now that I realise my iPad one is nothing but a disposable device thanks to Apple's arbitrary decision - well there goes my willingness to pay ultra-premium prices for Apple hardware any more.

If you then think thousands of customers (the so coveted first adopters when the iPad came out) are now entertaining thoughts of not buying Apple products again - and that will not harm Apple - I recommend you take your economy classes again.

As an Apple shareholder this decision has me ****** off because it will hurt the goodwill people have had with Apple - probably its biggest asset.

Since iOS 6 is not compatible for the iPad 1, thousands (in your mind) will consider never buying Apple again. But if iOS 6 WAS supported on the iPad 1, people STILL wouldn't buy new Apple products if their iPad can still support iOS 6. But that's not the reason at all that Apple chose to exclude the original iPad. I'm pointing out that whether iOS 6 is compatible or not does not change whether or not "thousands of customers" will buy new Apple products.

And I still don't know what all the fuss is about. There was never this much fuss when the iPhone 2G or 1st generation iPod touch stopped at 3.1.3, or iPhone 3G and 2nd gen iPod touch stopped at iOS 4.2.1, and I don't hear users of the 3rd generation iPod touch complaining that they cant get iOS 6.

You are right, we would not be buying an ipad3 if the ipad1 was supported by iOS6. We have not done so thus far, my personal reason being that the ipad3 has not been enough of a leap forward.

There is no technical reason for 1st gen iPad of upgrading into iOS 6. It's pure business. Apple has extremely short support for "old" devices. This is not just for iPads and iPhones but also Macintosh.

Think about iTunes 10.7. It requires OSX 10.6.8 (released in June 2011) but runs on Windows XP SP2 (released in August 2004). You need a Macintosh manufactured after 2008 to run OSX 10.6 (64-bit) but can run XP in a computer made last millenium! Either it's because Microsoft makes better OS (which I don't believe) or because Apple controls both its OS and devices (which is true anyway).

This shouldn't be any news to anybody, since it has been the case for years. Should it be like that? If you'll take a look of Apple's stock price, it appears it should. If you think it shouldn't, buy a Samsung or other instead. If there are millions of people doing that, Apple may change its policy. Of course Apple could tell people: "We are providing software updates into our products for 2-3 years". It would be fair. But I'm telling you that now

I guess what it really comes down to is, were they already in the planning stage of iOS 6 when the original iPad was in development? If so, they would have built the hardware around it. But my guess is that they weren't, so when they developed iOS 6, they added some hardware-specific features that the older-model iPad 1 was not equipped to handle.

Although, also look at it this way: Some people have made points that Apple is making iOS 6 compatible with all of the devices they still sell. Now that they are in the practice of offering the TWO latest model iPads, a future iPad should be compatible longer. Apple is currently supporting devices even before the A4 (that device would be the 3GS), so by the time we get through A4, A5, A5X getting to be the minimum processor needed, you should have more software updates available than with the original iPad.

My first iPhone (1) was jail broken, no problems. Even if you liked it had been.

It's apple that is hurting. Apple is hurting its custumers. Now me and 1000s of others. Yesterday they have hurt others. Tomorrow they will hurt. Why? Because of their lousy policies. And some day apple will have hurt so many that their ship is sinking. Key us hope someone change their policies before it is too late.

Let's face it - technology changes weekly - but the needs of people remain similar day to day. Communicating, writing, contacting, searching etc - if it gets quicker it help. If the hardware makes this happen then people will buy a new one - if it is the software then poeple will upgrade. If the hardware can't run the software people will tick along at a slower pace and eventually get left behind.

We don't buy technology - we rent it - everything has a lease that expires - technology has the shortest lease of all.

I just think that people should accept it - £500 quid for something that lasts a couple of years - that's an odd £20 a month just to have the technology. I would think only around 10% of the worlds population could come anywhere near affording this easily.

Suck it up - read a book, write a letter, go for a walk using an ordnance survey map that is over a 100 years old. What's not to enjoy?

You're in the UK correct? Not everyone can afford to cough out 500 quids for an iPad. I earn only a sixth of what a typical Brit earns even though I'm a high ranking IT specialist, due to the weak currency of the country (which is bound to get worse due to the shortsightedness of the governments' latest plans). I had to take out a loan because the iPad is much more expensive here. And as I mentioned before, the value of money I got out of my iPad is severely less because we got the iPad 6-7 months late over here. That's pretty much screwing us out of our hard-earned cash.

My apps, that's what! I am NOT happy with the fact that future updates of the apps that I use will not be available to my device. And those apps, they are not wants, but NEEDS. To say I need to buy a new device to continue enjoying an app I paid for, even though a software update to the existing device is suffice, is PURE DAYLIGHT ROBBERY.
