Has everyone really forgotten just what an iPad is?  Apple has always been quite clear - it is NOT a laptop computer!  One has an iPad in addition to ones computer.  No one would be happy with a computer that was not updateable after 2 years - they're a purchase many make expecting it to last 3-5 years.  I bought my iMac in 2009 and I'm in no hurry to upgrade - it serves my needs splendidly.

I also had an iPad 1.  I wanted it to keep near where I watch TV since my iMac is down the basement and I don't want to turn into a mole always living below ground.  I had previously used my late husband's iBook, but the HD died - just couldn't justify the expense of a 2nd computer in a one-person household.  So, I anxiously awaited the arrival of the first iPad and got one within a couple of weeks of it being introduced.  I ended up deciding to get the iPad 3 as I had recently had cataract surgery (I'm an old woman!), and the sharper screen was very appealing.  So, I sold my original iPad to my now 10 yr old grandson and he's thrilled with it - great to use while doing homework.  Would he love to have the latest bells and whistles?  Sure, but he's just thrilled that he has one at all.

I don't know how much the basic iPad costs in countries other than the US, but here it is $499.  Since this is something that is in addition to a computer, I cannot imagine taking two years to pay for one.  If I couldn't have afforded it, I would not have bought it.  And just because it was still not an inexpensive purchase (my late husband was a school teacher, so I'm not Lady GotRocks), it is a bit of a luxury for a product that will NEVER have the life expectancy of a computer.

As to all this "I'm leaving Apple forever", well I hate to break it to you, but holding your breath until you turn blue and then taking your dollies and going home is not going to convince Apple to continue to support a discontinued device. Remember, the iPad 1 was the ORIGINAL iPad!  Perhaps, newer iPads will have a longer life - there is a HUGE difference between the iPad 1 and the iPad 2.  So, if Apple does not serve your needs, then by all means buy a product that does.  Different strokes for different folks.  I'm just disheartened how so many (and I'm assuming most of you are young) folks today take everything SO personally - Apple is out to get YOU personally.  Apple is beholden to its customers and to its stockholders.  They do what is best for the majority of both.  They will NEVER be able to please everyone.  But it really is not all about "you"...

You know, hard to don't agree with you that the iPad is not a laptop computer. I bought it 'cause I was tired to take laptop with me when I go travel. What do I need? Internet browser, mailer, something to read tweets and that's all. But I also use an iPad for developing Apps for an iPhone. And what?  I can't do it even if I set the target to ios 5 or 5.1 in xcode, because a new xcode needs a device with ios6. I've used MS long time and when I changed a computer to Apple there was a big :wooow. But now is big: uuuu. They really don't minf people living outside the States. Maybe for you, guys, it's not a big deal to buy a new iPhone or iPad every year, but for others it's a problem, especially, when prices of all Apple stuff are much higher everywhere else.

BTW, if you don't know the cost of iPad in different country (Malaysia, if I good remember), just check it.

Such a visceral contribution from @quitsayingmetoo

When your therapist suggested that you use your words, I'm sure this is not what he or she intended:

"Use your freak'n head and learn a think or two about life cycle and progress."

"You really are just a little minded person..."

I sure do hope your spouse and children, assuming the court has allowed visitation, are not fearful of your bullying ways.

As a software developer running a quite successful consulting firm I have clients that provide me with remote access, typically remote control in the form of VNC or Terminal Server as well as an email account on their respective systems.  For security reasons they each require the latest set of patches to IOS devices before allowing remote access.  With IOS 5.1.1 as the latest iPad 1 incarnation, it would not be unreasonable to have Apple follow on with 5.1.2, etc... for some period of time, a time which represents a life cycle comparable to the other devices under IT control.  That is typically five years before End of Life (EOL) on hardware.

Most of the horsepower issues on the iPad 1 are around display and multi-tasking. What would it take to have a build of IOS 6.x that disabled the multi-tasking capability such that it worked as they originally intended, solely for mail and messaging?  They originally had a switch/setting that enabled/disabled the multi-tasking capability.  There is no doubt it is still present.

Since my display update is mostly for books, e-mail and remote access windows, the capability of my current device is more than sufficient.  Another poster suggested that the latest XCode didn't support version of IOS prior to 6. This is simply not true as I used this latest version to push a project down to my iPad 1.

It's just not as complicated to maintain some level of compatability as you may believe.  And with $500 Billion of net worth, the cost of incremental upgrades is certainly not a financial burden.

Should you decide to reply, please do so in a more appropriate manner than we've witnessed.

Sorry you are wrong. The Xbox 360 has had several major operating system updates since purchase, Microsoft is "pushing the envelope"  by incorporating Kinect into the xbox 360 without requiring the user to purchase a brand new entertainment console.

I can control my Xbox with my voice, I can yell at my ipad all day long but I still have to touch it to make it do what I want it to do! You clearly do not own a Xbox 360 so you must be unaware of everything it is capable of doing. One day I woke up and my Xbox updated and it was like going from windows 98 to Windows 7.

Apple dropped the ball big time on this one. I have been a big proponent of Apple and always defended them against those accusing them of being just a greedy and inconsiderate company. Now I no longer have any arguments in their favor. Dropping ios6 support for original ipad is just like a slap in the face, just like a thug that wants to get your money after it robbed you once. Shame on you, Apple!

Is anyone else with an iPad 1 having trouble getting updates to apps? Mine is showing that 16 need updating, but when I go into the App Store, and choose Updates, a dialog box tells me that it cannot connect to the iTunes Store. However, I certainly seem to be able to connect to the iTunes Store to buy new apps. Would this have anything to do with a major upgrade to the Store with IOS6 being introduced?

The updates are for iOS 6 only.  Keep the apps you have - they will most likely not be updated in the future.

Actually, with a bit of research, I managed to fix this problem, which is actually not related to the IOS6 upgrade. As for the advice that the updates are just for IOS6 only, that is not correct, and it was worth updating the apps. Thanks for your suggestions though.

iPad 1 owner, a little over 2 years old, never been dropped, only left the house 3 times, I am starting to have some intermittent screen flicker, dual band isn't working, updates are getting flaky, apps including Safari browser crash freqently, full charge doesn't last very long, etc.  My point, it's just a tablet, I didn't get the lifetime guarantee.  IOS6 isn't going to help me, it's served a purpose, overall very happy with product, may purchase another in future, possible I may get a few more years of service, may be able to re-purpose product.  iPad is just another tool, it really hasn't change my life.

It is just disappointing that the life span of apple products is getting shorter and shorter. It wasn't THAT long ago when i was installing OSX lepoard onto an 8 year old (at the time)  G4PowerMac with no problems whatsoever. Microsoft were often critisized for cutting the life of hardware products by the software that made them work... Seems Apple are heading in the same direction :/

I agree, I'm sitting here typing this on my iPad 1.  I bought it from a true believer off eBay with eight plus months of warranty just after ipad2 release.

BY THEN it was stable, had a plethora of usefull apps and was a fairly mature product ( at least in my eyes ) NOW I discover I'm obsolete and should pony up big $$$ to stay in the game. HOW MANY BUSINESSES were convinced to be like me? They wanted a proven product, didn't want employees screwing around with FaceTime etc. Now they too are looking at major bucks on a two year old machine that until recently had a promising future, was pretty stable and MET their needs.

I just bought a new MacBook and iMac about a month ago. The iMac will replace an old G4 ball iMac 2001. Until the last eight months or so had been upgraded to 10.4 and was doing great. Except for a few minor nits I still does 95% of what I need albeit slowly. These may be my last Macs ( I can always bootcamp them as windows ver 'x' machines. ) I neither love nor hate Mac. I lost my religion on the venerable Amiga. All three OSes I wanted to take a hammer to on many occasions.

What IS going on at Apple? How many years to get from OS 10.2 to 10.5 Loepard? Now we have screamed to 10.8 at a much faster pace. iOS has been on Supercruise! Two plus years and we're at OS ver 6 with the ipad1 obsolete and

Poking probably like there will be NO security and maintenance updates. As others have said when will ipad2 be consigned to the trash heap? I saved for the above macs and unlike the govt I like most of us these days don't engage in reckless debt.

Apple may find some of us leaving as our hardware is prematurely obsoleted. If I had a company with several dozen or hundred ipad1's I would be calling IT and asking about other platforms. Like it or not MS, and unix/Linux run the world. Moves like this may relegate Apple to becoming little more than a phone and iPod company. I'm mad as can be... I'll sit and watch, hope apple rejuvenated my ipad1. Until this I was going to get a touch to replace my Palm PDA. I think I'll hold on a little longer... Sorry apple,  my fingers are feeling scorched.

I must say I am in complete agreeance. Although I have purchased both the second and third generation of the device for myself, I did pass my original one on to my son.  It is a large disappointment that it cannot be updated to run the current iOS, or at least some variation thereof, as I know the hardware capabilities are not there for iOS 6. Otherwise there is a new "inability" for the original iPad to run many of the current or updated apps; this can make a device unuseable and therefore completely useless. This equals a poor investment that a company trusted by the public has led you into.

I do believe that it is a much agregious fault on Apple's part to have made a device "out of date" prior to the financial agreement being completed.  However, I must admit though, that we cannot hold company's accountable for the advancement of technology versus the length of our loan agreements.  If we made it a requirement for all of our loans to be paid off prior to any company advancing in technology or growth, we would all still be living in grass huts.  I do understand your complaint though, and I empathize with your points.

I dont know about this road apple has chosen but im not very happy about buying half a grand machines every year to keep up with apples flawless os systems!i chose apple many years ago because once you've bought a system of theirs,it was still flawles,up to date with latest stuff and freaking fast over years(even 4 years later).....

Now....looks like this has changed by apple!i loved apple because i didnt have to look for if my machine had to be pentium this..pentium that, didnt have to look for how much ram it had in it because it didnt matter it was fast as lightning from all those machines with huge rams and dual core pentiums!didnt have to worry about upgrading it when everytime something new came up in market(they come out really often)and worry about if its compatible with my system!!You know....that was what apple for me and at last i was found a place with peace in my mind as i didnt have to worry about my cores and rams and graphics cards etc anymore....

I owned a macbook,Macbook pro, iphone 3,3gs,4,4s,ipad1 all intime but no more sir im upset now...i still would be happy if apple hadnt slowed their previous machines by every update they bring up!u bought an iphone 5?freaking fast?well done good for you...but do you thinks its going to stay as fast as now when iphone 5s or similar new iphone hits the market in less than a year??no sir!no it wont...if you got another half a grand you can buy the same speed from apple tho so dont get upset!

I mean i like to share a little experience if you dont mind please..on my ipad1 i loaded up a mp4 hd movie via itunes as always, pressed play movie on ipad and bammm..."your ipad is too slow to play this movie".....seriously apple?cmoon?i jailbreaked my device(not proud of it but been forced after this) and copied the movie via ifunbox and played the same exact movie through ifile with ipad's movie player(yes the same one didnt open the movie before).....bammm....movie playing in hd flawlessly?!?!?whats that mean i thought to myself.....!?!then i realised apple has already chosen a road different from the one i fell in love with before....unfortunately yes...
