why 'stop the drama' ... it's not about dramatization, but about principles...

iPad is NOT mobile phone which time to live is about 2-3 years, it's something BETWEEN mobile & computer.
if WE - users allow them to drop support without the reason, soon you won't see new OSX release for 'old' (not anymore on sale) computers...

I don't ask for support oryginal iPhone ... but iPad is another beast... it should be treated more like computer, not mobile device. or m'I wrong ?

It really is a shame that Apple is ditching support for the original iPad in the iOS 6 release. The thing is barely even two years old and uses the same hardware as the iPhone 4 (maybe the amount of RAM is different between the two, I forget off-hand), so the decision seems based mostly on business/marketing tactics. I sold my original iPad quite a while ago now and just bought the third generation (which is awesome btw)...i'm content knowing that I'll /hopefully/ be getting OS updates for the next 1.5 years ;]

Two years of support for a device running a mobile OS is actually really good versus what other competitors offer. If support is the main concern, then really, there is no one else who supports products for as long as Apple for mobile devices. Most android devices are stuck with the OS they ship with, or at most, get one update. The iPad's gotten OS 3, 4, and 5, which is 3 major OS's, something that most (if not all) android tablets/phones do not beat.

Being "stuck" on iOS 5 doesn't render your iPad useless. It still works as well as it did before iOS 6 was announced.

My complaint isn't about "how well ios 5 works on my device." I'm very pleased with it. My concern is that moving forward, software updates for the hundreds of applications I've purchased will be increasingly unavailable for my device. It doesn't matter if it's a feature update or a bug fix, I won't be able to get it. The 2 year old, $830 piece of hardware is one thing. The software investment is another. I don't want to frame this as a "marketing/business" issue because those don't belong on a support forum. I want to position this as a technical hardship. I hope a third party makes a solution available, as Apple has very clearly dropped the ball here.

I think it's due to the fact that it doesn't have a mic or camera. I noticed that all the devices that support ios 6 have a mic and cam. The iPad 1 does not.

The reason why ios 6 won't be available for the iPad 1 is because of the iPad 1's lack of ram, processing power, camera, and mic. The iPad 1 has a much greater resolution than the 3GS so it requires more ram, and processing power than the 3GS. It's not because Apple is greedy or selfish, It's because the iPad 1 is simply not able to support it unless they make a completely stripped down version of ios 6 (Basically ios 5). Please stop dissing Apple.

Let's remove one thing from the equation "iOS 6 isn't compatible with iPad 1st gen because...": it's not a lack of a mic, because the original iPad does in fact have a microphone. It is located right next to the headphone jack on the top of the device (resembles a tiny dot). Just take a look at a pic of the original iPad and see for yourself :]

Now the lack of camera...that is a little more viable regarding why they will not be updating the original iPad's OS. my bet would be due to the ridiculously low amount of RAM and a single core CPU (which is also kind of odd seeing as the iPhone 4 uses the same A4 CPU as the 1st gen iPad). Oh well, just speculating here.

Does anybody know how iOS6 is going to affect apps like pages and numbers that needed iOS5 to work? Will it be the same after the update? Am I going to get that error message saying this app needs iOS6 to function, and being unable to update to iOS6, am I then I going to have to to the Apple store and get nasty for a refund for them given it's their apparent lack of care about original iPad users that's caused the problem?

The only people who would know the answer to that are developers and they work under Non Disclosure Agreements. You're going to have to wait until Apple releases iOS 6 for an answer. Sorry.

Without regards to any third party applications, beta releases of OS's generally are bare-bones and are meant for devs to optomize their apps (if required) for the new iOS. Since iWork is controlled by Apple and not a third party dev, we won't know until iOS 6 is out or near launch.

That is what I am thinking too. Since Apple still sells the 3GS, they still need to support it with software updates.

I bought my iPad 1 on 14/03/2011. And now it is 16 months old already, that there is no software upgrade (IOS 6) is more?
